Hello All:

I have been interested in sidecars for the last two years. Last winter, I set up a rig using a 1981 Yamaha XJ650 and a 1981 Velorex 562. It has been a blast so far. Neither is in show quality condition but they are mechanically excellent. My riding is primarily local (country) two lane roads, running errands etc. and seldom with a passenger.

Now to my question. My current set up was meant to expose me to sidecars to see if I wanted to go in with both feet. My original idea was that if I liked it (and I do) I would use my 2006 Harley Fatboy and purchase a Texas Sidecar Ranger, a Champion or Liberty sidecar. At this point, however, I am unsure whether I should go to the expense, given the way I ride, or just continue to enjoy what I have and possibly improve the cosmetics of my current rig.

I value you thoughts and comments as I work through this decision process.

Thanks.

Larry

If you still are into long solo tours keep the Harley cruiser as is. If you opt to do the same with a sidehack rig it takes more muscle work with a hack but you have tons of carry space. The cost is in gas mileage and you'll probably need to slow it down a bit. You will work harder even with a trail conversion. With this you will have a dedicated sidehack rig and no more solo riding option.
It's nice to have both options open for short day tripping.

It sounds like you are in a good place right now. If physical changes make solo riding tougher in the future then go for the dedicated bigger rig.

My 2 cents,

Lonnie

You might also consider our M72C or CX sidecar both are on sale right now. I would set up the Harley with steering modifications and more then likley you will find that you do not miss having the bike as a two wheeler.

Talk you into it or out of it? That is a tough one. You have gotten your feet wet and obviously enjoy the sidecar world. You have the makings of a larger more powerful soidecar outfit with your Harley but have some thoughts of just keepiong what you now have. Hmmmm.... kind of a delima huh?
As far as what sidecar to go with if you do make the move that is tough also. Call each manufacturer. You will find they are quite candid and decent to talk to. Don't be afraid to ask them about others in the business.
Liberty? Absolutely beautiful workmanship and a very very nice sidecar. Say hello to Pete for me.
Texas sidecar? Less expensive but Bob and Deb take a lot of pride in what they produce.
Champion? Very Good product even though their present focus seems to be high on trikes.
Even though we do make our own sidecars (heck take a look at our offerings also at freedomsidecars.com) I can't say enough good about each one of these manufacturers. We will be listing Liberty at our site soon as well.
By the way don't rule out motorvation. Good folks there.
Also Hannigan Motorsports makes an excellent sidecar that wouydl do very well on your bike. The Hannigan Classic. It does not have the 'retro' look but does have excellent comfort and so forth. Good folks down ther eion Kentucky.
Feel free to call me if you have any questions.
