STEP Instructor Prep and Novice Classes at the USCA Rally
The USCA National in Duluth is June 12-15, 2008. Folks have asked every year if we could have a STEP class at the rally [then they say, well, not "at" the rally because we don't want to miss anything]. We hear you and I think we have the answer!
There will [probably] be a STEP Instructor Preparation course [for folks who want to be STEP sidecar instructors] that runs from Friday June 6th through Thursday June 12th. That INCLUDES observed instruction of a Novice Step course that will run on Wednesday June 11th and Thursday June 12th. This course will equip the successful students with a STEP instructor's designation. They can then teach STEP courses on their own for fun and/or profit. Having a STEP IP [Instructor Preparation] is a pretty rare thing and the last one held in the central US was about seven years ago. Unless you want to travel to the East or West coast this is a great opportunity. As a STEP instructor you will have access to STEP materials and insurance as well as publicity for your courses. There may also be some tax advantages regarding your motorcycle equipment but you'll have to ask you tax man because I am not a CPA [and don't even play one on radio].
The cost for the Instructor Course will be $600 for USCA members [that is a substantial discount from the usual $1,000 or so]. It's even less than the subsidized non-resident price in Washington State. Remember that while it is a lot of money, you are essentially buying a small business, it's an investment. The Novice Class hasnβt been priced yet but it will doubtless be less than $50 for USCA members. In order for these classes to be held we must have a FULL IP class, that's twelve students. We have three slots spoken for. This next part is important if you want to be in the IP. To register for the IP, you must contact me...

To hold a spot we need a deposit in the amount of $300. A check made out to the USCA will do fine. Yes, we will cash the check [full refund if the class doesn't go but if you sign up and we canβt fill your spot if you donβt show you loose it]. I'll give you info on where to send the check after we talk. Don't send money before you find out if there is a spot open for you. We will have a waiting list and the same deposit applies. Why the deposit? The USCA is going a bit out on a limb here. We have to make substantial commitments to get a Chief Instructor and assistant to Duluth as well a shell out for course materials [$250 per student] and insurance as well as guaranty the range. All in all it's a lot of effort and a big dollar item.
All this is set up so that you can go to the class and then stay for the USCA 30th Annual Rally at the Buffalo Valley Campground just west of Duluth.
Iβm open for questions both here and privately.
Hi,
Your post is an older one, I am aware.
Still I wonder if you found people here at the east coast. I would be interested to learn and practice.
Please let me know if you are aware of something.
I'm living in Hudson NY.
Thank you ,
Norbert.

Norbert...WELCOME to the USCA sidecar forums.
We just completed our annual National Sidecar Rally, and this year it was held in Topsham, Maine, so it would have been a very close rally for you to attend.
Each year this National Sidecar Rally gets moved around to one of the 78 different regions of the country, and next year it will be in Mena, Arkansas....in early June.
Wish you could have attended the National Sidecar Rally in Maine.
Check with the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) to see if there are any sidecar and trike classes being held in the Northeast.

Norbert, the closest I see is Poweride University which is located in Maryland and Viginia. Are you new into the sidecar world and what kind of setup do you have.
