Ride or Drive?
I'm a newbe to the sidecar world (6 months)and was suprised to read in Peter Egan's article about the Ural - in the latest issue of Cycle World -that evidently one "drives" a rig. Is that true?
I used to correct people that said they drive motorcycles with the following; "you drive cattle and drive cars and you ride hourses and ride bikes". I will be sad if I can't use that line when refereing to hacks.
This is sort of controversial topic, but most all of the references I've seen refer to DRIVING a rig.
once that SC is installed, forget all your 2 wheel riding training...you DRIVE a rig, by turning the bars just like a car wheel, not like leaning a 2 wheel bike thru the turns.
It's a whole new animal.
just like driving a 4 wheel ATV.
You can NOT ride a rig, you must DRIVE it. It will not turn itself buy shifting weight
I ride my bicycle and drive my car. I go for rides on my Urals while I drive on nice backroads and enjoy the scenary. We used to go for rides in cars just for the fun of it; we'd drive and drive. I fly my model airplanes which ride on the wind.
If you live in America you enjoy the freedom of speech which allows you to use either term. Both are accurate and correct.
Lose your job, lose your wife, lose your children, lose your health, see the country fall into war on our own soil, watch the economy crash, witness famine and true need; then maybe we'll stop fussing over such trivial stuff. But that's just my opinion.
Three and four wheeled vehicles must be driven. Two wheeled bikes are single track vehicles and a slight push on one of the bars will make it bank into the turns. There are no lateral forces apparent when on a bike, whereas on a three wheeled rig one is pushed from side to side in a turn just as in a car or truck. Sidecars and Trikes are two and three track vehicles and must be steered to turn (Driven).
Quads are somewhat similar to drive but all that I have driven have linked steering as opposed to the direct steering of a hack rig or trike and feel quite different due to the lack of road feedback through the bars.

Many use the term "Pilot" when referring to a hacker which is a more comprehensive term due to the added effort that is required with all appendages when "Driving" a sidecar outfit.

I think I like Ural3wheels reply the best. I had no idea that "riding" somehow equates to counter steering a two wheeled motorcycle. So when I ride a horse and I pull on the right rians and the horse turns right I'm not riding at all I must be driving!
Pilot, I like that too. I hope I don't p*ss of any pilots though!
ever notice that a horse LEANS into the turn just like a solo bike?
just watch them run around in circles, leaning left and right.

I'm with you. This comes up frequently and some people get all upset about it. It doesn't matter what you call it, just do it.
Bob,
Sure, a horse (or mule) leans but aren't they a 4 track vehicle? LOL
By the by, I have "Driven" teams of both genre and "Ridden" solo models.
Horses may have more bling, but for work, I prefer the mules.

Shucks - does it REALLY matter what you call it?! ENJOYING the ride or drive seems to be what's most important.
Sidecar Ron
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU NECK REIN A HORSE AND WILL THAT ALSO WORK ON MY TRIKE AND SIDECAR OR IS THAT ONLY EFFECTIVE WHEN RIDING MY TWO WHEELER
When you want to go left with a solo bike you push the left bar and the bike will bank to the left, when you want to go left with a Sidehack rig or trike you pull the left bar and STEER it to the left.
No neck reining here in either instance.

I was told I rode a tricycle when I was a kid. To now learn that I did not ride it would be quite tramatic and could very well be a life changing revelation. To me if you sit on it you are riding it. Steering techniques can be different though. To be perfectly candid about it who cares? Lets go for a ride..er uh drive.
So you were a Trike "Pilot" once, huh Claude?
One of them rich Yuppies I guess. We wuz poor, Couldn't even afford a Dad.
My big brother did gleep a wooden wagon for me once at a Trading Post.
He said "hop in", I did and off we went. I painted it red later with some old enamel I found that never did dry. (I guess that was due to bad Karma).
Like I said earlier, Us folks along the Northern tier have too much free time in the winter.
Spring's coming and we can all hit the long roads, Pilot,Ride,Drivin'.
Lonnie
No Lonnie we were not rich by any means. Tricycle was a used one painted for me by my grandfather. Funny that we may have been poor but I never knew it. No, in some ways maybe we were rich if you know what I mean.Times have changed in today's world.
