Here's my review of a new dog goggle being produced by a young couple from Jackson, Wyoming. They're called "RexSpecs."

RexSpecs appear to be aimed primarily at the working dog owner, specifically law enforcement and military. But when I first saw them, I thought they'd possibly be a quantum leap beyond Doggles for sidecar use. They cost $80 (plus shipping) for the goggles with two lenses (one clear, the other with your choice of tints). My conclusion after 3500 miles of sidecar use? Fantastic! Definitely worth the money if your dog does a lot of miles.

Here's what I like about the Rex Specs--

  1. the straps do not have to be tight for the goggles to stay firmly planted. When Kirby's RexSpecs are on, they are in fact "loose." I can pull the frames away from his face with very little effort, yet they stay in place even at 80mph with no windscreen.
  2. the straps are not elasticized--they are flat nylon straps. Once they are adjusted, they stay that way.
  3. the RexSpecs are easy to put on and take off. In my opinion, easier than Doggles.
  4. the lens is not scratch proof, I don't think, but is close to it. After 3500 miles, Kirby's lens looks almost new. With Doggles after 3500 miles, Kirby has all but destroyed them.
  5. the lens and the frame are very soft and flexible to better conform to Kirby's snout and face.
  6. the field of view is unrestricted. Kirby can see EVERYTHING!
  7. the lens never fogs up because of the great ventilation through the top and bottom foam-covered vents.
  8. they're durable. After 3500 miles they're still in great shape. I expect to get lots of miles out of these.

Here's what I don't like--

  1. the head strap, even after you trim it to size, flaps in the wind. This strap needs a "keeper" of some sort to keep it secure. If I was the designer, I'd use a stretchy piece of neoprene tubing about 2" long and threaded onto the left side of the head strap so that the loose end could be stuffed into it.

A note about the pics--in many of the pics the RexSpecs are positioned on top of Kirby's ear muff. This makes the goggles easier to photograph but I suggest you NOT use them this way. For the RexSpecs to stay in place, the head band must go under the ears. That's what keeps them from moving or falling off. While traveling, I placed the RexSpecs on first, then deployed the ear muff on top. This worked great.

Kirby, by the way, is a 6-year old 50-lb Giant Schnauzer-Standard Poodle mix with about 25,000 miles of sidecar riding experience.

The pics taken in my backyard (below) show the condition of the RexSpecs after 3500 miles of riding and innumerable putting ons and taking offs. We encountered temps below freezing, and temps in excess of 100 F. The lens has taken direct hits from any number of bugs, including hornets, the yellow and black remains of which are easily cleaned off.

About Doggles. Doggles work fine for me provided that--

  1. it's a short ride, say two to three hours. For all day use, or for multi-day trips, Doggles become uncomfortable for Kirby primarily due to the pressure of the frames against the bones around the eyes.
  2. we're staying on surface roads at speeds below 50mph. At 65-85mph, the wind blast pushes Doggles up on Kirby's forehead where, of course, they are useless. To counteract this, I have to ratchet down the Doggle straps really really tight, and that makes them even more uncomfortable (see #1 above.) And even if you get the straps tight, they don't stay that way--they always manage to "self-adjust" to a looser setting.

Thanks DRONE - I hadn't seen the RexSpecs - might be an alternative for dogs like Maddie who learn to use the edge of the sidecar body to remove the Doggles.
