Rear tire question?

I plan on leaving the hack on full time, and I see where rear tire wear is a major concern, has anyone mounted a car tire on an Harley Ultra, or does one even fit? Hitting the road today in search of paint and parts for Brian's project. Bike mounting hardware in route, bank is 720 less, lol. The price of fun, seeing Brian on the road..........priceless. See ya soon or on the road.

16" Harley rims will take a auto tire easily. Just find one with a profile that will clear the belt and swingarm yet have approximately the same diameter as your stock motorcycle tire for the best speedo readout.
They will last about 4 times as long as a bike tire and are considerably less expensive.

For the 16" tires Google tire Specifications. You'll get sizes, speed ratings, profile ratios, width (on standard rims) and overall diameters.
For the 15" motorcycle we won't recommend any auto tire since the bead diameter differs dramatically from bike rims and the bike rim seat is much narrower causing a dangerous situation due to the high air pressures needed to seat the tire on the rim. Some have done it, some others have been gravely injured trying with the 15 inchers.

So what would be a safe way to get car tires on front and back? Are there rims out there?

David,
We've solved the front 16" tire issue already.
For the rear, have a wheel shop or bike shop lace up a 16" rear wheel on your hub and use the same Google information given for the front 16" wheel to find the correct tire for it.

Ergo two 16" wheels with auto tires.

for 15" its really best to get a 15" car size rim fitted to the bike..

the 15" bike rim is not the same size

As far as the Harley 16" rim, would a "classic" tire such as an Excelsior 500/525-16 tube-type tire work?

Per http://store.cokertire.com/500-525-16-excelsior-blackwall-tire.html - it is recommended for 3.5" rims with 26" overall diameter vs. 25.7" for the Dunlop MT90B16. But the width is only 4.12" vs. 5.2" for the Dunlop?

the unfortunate part is that some of the newer softails will carry a car tire with NO modifications......

so if you have a liberty or some other aftermarket sidecar that will attach to a softail its a cinch to mount up a car tire

but for a hd hd rig there are no current 16" tires that will fit.

Sorry Jane,
You'll have to do your own research, I'm not looking to use automobile tires. I'm content with using the premium Dunlop motorcycle tires that were designed for use on the Harleys. When the wear bars show up I buy new ones ( I pay too much for my bikes too).

We did our research, and even queried friends in Europe and Asia, no 16" Automotive tire currently will fit a Harley equipped with a 3.5" rim. I'm just sayin'....
