Old shovel cool. I have work on more shovels then any thing else. But I do not like the cow crap tops on the late model. Now I can say them made me a lot of money.
Drum brakes are just fine as you do not want the hack brake to stop too quick our you will be making right turns every time you put on the brakes. That is why the later HD hacks have such a small disc as it is all you need.
How do you handle it with those ape hangers? I could tell you of some that ran apes and found out why they are dangerous. But each to there own.
2k is a forth of what I live off a year for the past 3 years so I will keep mine pearl black which looks more gray in the sun. Glade my was not yellow! LOL
My rig is the rig of many colors. The bike is red the right lower faring for a hack is black and the rig is pearl black that looks gray to me. I
This is my old bike that only has a little over 90K on it which I bought new. Keep us posted.
Your lucky, your colors work and look good together......Yellow was a bit to bright for me next to my Red bike..
I had the hack wired and ready to reinstall on the bike when I noticed the tire was flat, so off it came and off to the tire shop......
I must say I'm impressed with my new matching fenders, I blinged them both the same.....pics coming soon..
Yellow sure stands out and easily seen but I do understand. Yes mine does not look out of place on mine. I was lucky and when I bought mine it has VERY little use. I all so do all my own tire work as well as everything on my bike. I have more money in special tools then I do my rig LOL. Looking forward to seeing your finished project.
I hear ya....I have plenty of bent, twisted and home made contraptions in my tool drawers as well to get my job done....I've not riden mine that much but didnt notice weather those ape hangers were going to be a problem. I have the original buck horns and clutch cable around here some where if I need them. I'm looking forward to warmer weather so I can ride this thing......
I've found the Harley "Buckhorn" bars are like rototiller bars, requiring elbow and lateral forearm muscle control.
Being a long rider I find that this style of bar wears on one quickly. Especially with a loaded hack.
For a sidehack rig I prefer bars that allow push/pull from the shoulders. Later FLH bars for instance. On many other Harley tugs I've used the 1995 Wide Glide bar. The '96-''07 RK/RG High bars also allow steering straight from the shoulder and cost of these bars are quite reasonable.

Looks good!! Very nice!

Looks great in red!
If you wanna become a long distance sidecar driver dump the Apes for much better control.
Don't bother with a disc brake on the hack - I had to put an adjuster in line to divert 60% of the braking power to the bike because the hack wanted to do a quick right hand turn when I applied the brakes. And the disc squeals like crazy. But I found some stuff at the parts store you apply to the brakes and it makes it really quiet and it still stops quite nicely.
I also wanted a reverse and built my own. But it never did come up to my expectations so I ditched it to the storage shed. For the $3000 they want for a reverse I can push the darned thing! And if I need the help I can get my wife to help - nothing like a dependable riding partner - - - -
Nice looking rig!

I have not had a problem with my disc brakes just hooked them up like the manual said and have worked great for the last 3,000 miles. Yes the mine makes all kind of noise is my only grip. Steve N what do you use on yours to stop the squealing?
I do agree the standard brakes on yours is more then you need and will work fine. You do not want to stop the hack wheel just slow it down.
Very nice looking rig. I sure would get some different handlebars.
Do you have a raked tree or are you going to install a steering damper?
the sidecar disk brake works just fine.
IF you read the manual it says to use both front and rear at the same time and it will stop straight - it even tells you how to modulate between the front and side to get a perfect straight stop - the design is that the front brake will make the bike pull to the left a bit and the sidecar brake will make it pull to the right a bit. so if you always use both - its just perfect.
if however - you use ONLY the rear brake it will pull right & put you in the ditch.
its a recipe for disaster and death to not be using the front brake ALL the time on a sidecar rig - the thing has a gvwr of 1600 pounds - trying to stop with one disk in the back isnt going to keep you from hitting the car pulling out in front of you.
that said - as long as you dont run into me - do what you want

If I just let off the throttle mine will pull some to the right and when giving throttle to the left which I was told is normal. I can use either front or rear by its self and I have no problem contorting the rig. If you look at a manual on a two wheeler it all so tells you to use both and that is what habit I have gotten into in my past 40 plus years of none stop riding.

Sorry you took my statement as a the only way to do things. I was talking about the lack of necessity of having a disc. I found mine pulled radically to the right. And yes I know how to use the front brake. Until I put the modulator on it the only way it would stop straight was using the front brake exclusively. Book reading is not a means of removing real life on the road experience with my particular setup. I reckon I wasn't clear enough.
Yes it does pull to the right a bit on takeoff and pushes to the left on stopping. But it seemed pretty natural to me and it only took a few stops and starts to get it down pat.
I promise not to run into you - 🙂
Be well

I'm going to wait and see when I ride it this spring and decide what I need, I have no experience riding this bike with a sidecar....My plan is to take to some back roads and parking lots and play around with it.
After reading all the advise on this forum I think that would be the smart thing to do......
