Since you're all sidecar experts I though I'd ask something that's been bothering me for years... What is this? The sidecar was used extensively in a number of mid-80's music videos from Heavy Metal band Judas Priest. I've been unable to find any info or pictures of it online, so this is simply my rough collage based on video exerts. It appears to be a one-off rig, very crude and unsafe in design. How's the monkey supose to suppose riding it???Any and all comments are appreciates as I'm still puzzled by it.

That is an enduro type competition rig as might be used in enduros such as the Paris/Dakar run (which was canceled this year). The reason that the car is at best minimal is that the monkey needs to be able to do whatever gymnastics possible to help get the car through rough terrain.

Most rigs of this type are custom one off rides and it's not always possible to say what brand it started as unless you can see the motor. These bikes aren't exactly heavily modified as much as they are built from the ground up using every possible trick to make the bike stronger, more powerful and more suited to the rigorous punishment they have to withstand.

What brand is this one?

No idea, but I recognize the type and purpose. Specialized bikes ridden by driven souls out to conquer the most strenuous challenges that can be posed for motorcycles.

Looks to be more like something out of a road warrior movie. For some serious dakar and off road machines google 'H U Sidecars' , Horst Ulrich' or 'Hog wild Racing'.

I see. You'd think it would at least include a seat for the monkey. Off-road sidecars sound intersting, I didn't think they existed.

For more off-road sidecar rigs. See: "dualsport sidecars" on the internet.

FYI: We're not all experts. Most of us are still just Perts.

Wow, thanks for posting that. I never expected to find someone else here who a) knew of those videos, b) thought that rig was weird, and c)cared enough to find out what it was! LOL.

Some of us still like metal, even if it's not "in" today. I'm 20 and just love it.If I wasn't going with a scooter, I'd seriously consider making a re-make of the rig, especially if one doesn't need the utility room in the sidecar. Wonder if anybody would recotnize it on the streers. Maybe Halford himself could see it in Arizona and say something like "That's my bike mate!"PS. This post is split in three paragraphs, but will likely be posted as one. Editing the post doesn't work at all, I can't even correct spelling mistakes.

You're quite correct, as one can be seen in Mad Max 2!

Hello all. My name is Tim D or Deebs. I just purchased the Judas Priest sidecar rig off of Ebay a few weeks ago. I am a huge Judas Priest fan as well as a Die Hard motorcycle collector, builder, and rider. The motorcycle has been sitting since 1986. The bike is a 1980 Yamaha XS1100 (so is the dual headlighted sidecar rig in The Road Warrior). The sidecar is custom made. The bike was originally purchased from Ted Willams dealership in CA. The bike was built by a special effects outfit for the videos Turbo Lover and Locked In with three other motorcycles. In the video the bike was driven by the bass player and band co-founder Ian Hill with the bands drummer in the monkey seat. MTV disabled the contest bike to prevent lawsuits when they gave the bike away. I am restoring it to running condition but will not change it in any way. The bike will be shown soon in a motocycle museum. Attached pictures here....

I built a lighter version of that many many years ago onto a Jawa motocrosser powered by a Honda engine.
Lotta fun!

When I was stationed in Germany in the mid 70's our town sponsored an international motocross race, my unit provided medical support for the races. There was a class of sidecars, they'd run the same course as the 2 wheel bikes. They'd just started a heat of the sidecar racers, when the lead bike's monkey got knocked off by an opponent in the first set of loop the loops. He'd been run over by several bikes before anyone knew what had happened. We got the red flag and stopped the race, to carry the injured rider off to the course, when I went to cut his boot off to get his xrays, he said no, he would pull it off. I knew his lower leg was broken, but he didn't want to have his high dollar boots cut. After getting him casted, he asked if he would be able to ride the next race, in 2 weeks. NO, was my quick response. The sidecar rigs were virtually identical to those in the OP and, to me, the skills involved in those riders being able to negotiate those curves and jumps was amazing, but the sanity of the monkeys REALLY needed to be questioned!!!

The sanity of the pilots isn't any better. I used to be one.
