How much tire tread is safe?
most tires here have a wear bar indicater right in the tread,..if tread down to that,..MTO requires replacement,..but we have all pushed it to another paycheck once or twice,..check pirrelli for 16" tires,..rice burning hot-rodders run them, low profile, slim width ..130 width may be available,..my 800 suzi has a 155/60 15 BFG,..no wider then the 150 dunflop I removed,..at 20,000kms so far , like new. ..cheers crawf.

A better question is - what is the cost of a tire worth when the one you are riding on chooses to self destruct? It probably won't happen when you are sitting in your driveway, but at highway speeds is the value of your hide equal to the cost of a tire? Maybe black spray paint could cover the white wall?
Good advise. I know this as I have had a tire go bang at over 70mph, never again.
I have just replaced both my tires on my BMW because they were old, the tread was almost 100%.
Got my new Excelsior 500/16 ordered from Vintage tire as I couldn't seem to find it on the Coker site. I hope it wears better that the stock Dunlop.
Gotta go back and see about set up , but suspect recent driving conditions also contributed to tire wear. We recently took a trip to the Great Smokies and came back north on the Blueridge Parkway to the Skyway. Lots and lots of tight turns, stopping and going and the sidecar was loaded each day in addition to wife and dog. I could almost see the tire disappear before my very eyes.
On my Road King rig I have gotten about 6500 miles on each of two rear Dunlop 402s.
I also have the same WW problem - the bike came with them (plus I'm a naturally born poser).
From what I can determine there doesn't seem to be a tire out there for the Harley rear wheel that is going to get 8-12,000 miles so I guess I'll stay with the 402s.
I get at least 10,000-12,000 with the Dunlop Elite E3. Did the same with the E2's.
Tugging which sidecar? Or is that solo?

Lonnie, I get 10-12000 miles on a GL1100 with Watsonian sidecars. Had a Cambridge, Palma and now a Monaco for the last 7 years. The Dunlop Elites always gave the best mileage, even when loaded with 3 people and camping for 2 weeks. Doug

I use those tires too but haven't gotten near that mileage on the rear tire of the bike pulling a hack. Averaged about 6K with these combos:
RK/Spyder, Panhead/URAL, FXLR/562, FXLR/Sputnik, FXRS/562HD, FXLR Springer/562, RK/TLE, FXDL/563T, Current FXDL/563T (3K and half gone).
Conservative riding geezer who uses the gearbox instead of relying on the brakes. I run them down to near the wear bars then change them out.

keep seeing ref to whitewalls saw these on ebay Vintage Tyres, white wall trims 16", item no 260418623898. so you can stick em on any tyre you like. Hank

Doug,
Is that the same as a Dunlop K491? We have gotten 10k with them.
There is an Elite 3 Bias ply tire and a 491 Elite 2 which I believe is a radial.

Anyone ever use one of these? http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/3/14/458/6207/19759/PITEM/Shinko-Classic-240-Whitewall-Tire-2001-Harley-Davidson-Road-King---FLHRI-Parts.aspx
The price is right and it is a wide white wall
