Fitting a CJ to a 77 BMW R100S
Hello, I'm Mick and this is my first post.
I have a 77 R100S and a CJ sidecar on the way from China.
The sidecar is aparently coming with everything needed to fit it to the bike, but I have heard of people using a subframe when mounting a sidecar to a BMW. Are there any plans available for making a subframe, and does the bike really need one ? I gather a subframe is just to make the frame more rigid, if this is the case could I not just beef up the frame ? The R100S comes with a stronger frame than the frame used on the earlier 900.
Thanks
Mick
You will be much better off with a subframe. Subframes add strength and also will allow you to place the mounts so the rig is easier to adjust.
I am curious about your statement that says:"The sidecar is aparently coming with everything needed to fit it to the bike". That woudl be a good thing but it would be the first case of a CJ being suppiler ready to bolt right up that i have heard of. Typically they have ball and collet lower mounts (like a Ural) which woudl bolt up to a /2 but that's about it.
Goota say, though, that a good CJ is a great sidecar and once installed you shoudl have a good outfit there.

Do you have any idea where I could get hold of plans to make my own ? Dealers charge an arm and a leg for these things, I have been quoted $700 and up. Seems a bit expensive when the sidecar is costing $900. I think I could buy the materials to make my own for as little as $20.

This is what he told me.....
...."we can sell you the side car seperately and paint the color you like, a complete side car(including side car bucket, side car frame and all the parts for connecting the sidecar to your Solo, wheel, seat) is usd900 and transportation cost is usd 300 to your place. Our company has exported more than 200 pieces of motorcycles to Canada and we enjoy high reputation and our products are very good quality, worthing trusting.
Any more questions, please let me know.
Best regards.

Maybe wait and see what arrives?
You can do your own subframe ,many have. Main thing is to pick up as many attachement points as possible , get the lower mounts positioned for good support and spaced out well and try and get them about the same distance from the ground and the same distance from the center oif the bike. You should also place a crossmember between the frame tubes under the seat to distribute the load of th eupper rear mount. I prefer using round stock 1 1/4 x .120 wall but you can use square stock also.

That sounds a lot like the deal I put together a few years back using a Shanghai broker. I'm still waiting for my sidecars. lol
Good Luck,

What was his name ?
I don't remember the name he used now but he has since used other websites with other names. I think "Long River" was one of them.

I tell you what Mick, I wouldn't pinch pennies on mounting even if the sidecar was free. What would you say to someone that lost their lug nuts and planned to glue their wheels on? Good handling and reliable service require a well-designed and sturdy subframe. Snowbum's tech page has a good write up on the type of mount you need for a /7: http://bmwmotorcycletech.info/sidecartech.htm
Motohack,I think you are right.
I will take a look at snowbums write up now.
Thanks
The Dauntless sub-frame is 2 piece and better braced than Neff's. The rear mount attaches to both sides of the Beemer frame.

Lonnie,I frequently ask for references on statements of relative superiority. As a recovering engineer and a Neff owner, I want to debate your last post.I can factually comment on the quality of the Neff subframe based on 14 yrs and 85 thousand miles of experience. I ride it hard, fly the chair (a lot), carry heavy loads, drift through bumpy turns and campout at the end of 30+ mile washboard dirt roads. Every fastener maintains torque; I never have to realign toe or leanout; Nor has anything on the bike side ever shown any signs of undue stress. The latter is a key consideration for a subframe and requires very careful engineering to realize. IMHO, if there is anything "better" we don't need it. So, I can testify that the Neff subframe is a very good design and recommend it without reservation. I can't comment on the Dauntless subframe because I don't have any experience with it. I simply don't know where it stacks up against other products. IMHO, comparing subframe designs without considering the flow of forces when the rig is all bolted together is meaningless. I know you are in the business and probably know a thing or two. Have you ever seen one or the other fail in service? If so, what were the circumstances?
I had intended to get a subframe before the sidecar arrived, but I just recieved this from the guy that's sending me the sidecar....
"You mentioned connecting the side car to the BMW Solo, the sidecar i give you includes all the connecting parts to BMW Solo. But you need to install the parts on your BMW. I myself has a BMW R80, i also installed a CJ side car on it, attached is the picture.
Hopefully it will come with a subframe. I will wait to see what connecting gear arrives.
