I recently came across a few neat pictures of some Bernardet sidecars. Apparently the company produced some boat-tailed styled sidecars originally in about 1924-1931. I found a design program called SmartDraw and just started playing about with it today, since I could not really find a small boat plan that looked quite the same as the sidecar. Any rate, I figured it was just a series of overlaid ovals if you look from the top downwards. My first attempt sure needs some work (laughing at myself here), but the basic design element is there anyway. I was able to white out the SmartDraw logo stuff when I converted it to a jpeg file and used my paint program to see what a color combo may look like for it. I posted a pic or two of the sidecars here, but somehow I accidentally made a double pic on a couple of them when the machine said they did not load. Not sure if you can eleminate single pics from the posted albums or if you have to delete the entire album and start over.
Has anyone ever fooled with attempting to make a boat-tailed sidecar? I know that drop tanks were popular after the war and the boat-tailed rigs were similar to the old Model T or Model A speedsters.
Just a pipe dream for me making one anytime soon, but I found the free download SmartDraw program and was just having a bit of fun with it. There are other programs that may be more simple, but this was just one I chose to play with today. Anyone have any other good pics of the Bernardet sidecars? Ever see them at shows or such? Not sure if they ever made their way into the states from France. Any other makes besides Bernardet that produced a boat-tail designed sidecar?

As a new member of this board, let me introduce myself:
I'm Chris, grand-son of René BERNARDET, one of the 3 BERNARDET brothers, owner of the www.bernardet.com website, member of the Association of Bernardet vehicles, and writer of the soon published book about my grand-pa's industrial life.
I realize this topic is quite old, but I never ran into it before today.
The Bernardet sidecars were manufactured between 1929-30 to 1948.
Their main activity was towards a public customer base, but WWII came in and they produced for the French Army, then forced to produced for the occupant.
That period of time made that they never had a chance to export to the USA.

Huey, I understand and appreciate your concern about the beautiful lines of the sidecars, my grand-pa was the designer.
But I have to bring one point: the Bernardet brand still exists and the family is very concerned about people trying to make illegal counterfeit copies, even for one sidecar.

There are actually quite a few boat shaped sidecars on the net. Many are British if I remember right. I have thought about building on of my own design, too.
Chris, welcome. Nice to have a 3rd gen sidecar family here. Not sure about French law, but pretty sure anyone in the US can build a copy or replica of anything for personal use.
