Getting the itch to do some long term travel again.  Thinking a smaller Toy Hauler Travel Trailer might be a good way to do this travel with the sidecar rig.  I spent a year and a half traveling around the western U.S. but it was with a big 5th wheel.  It had a washer/dryer, dishwasher, etc..  Very comfortable but too huge, and required staying in the large crowded, private RV parks.

Thinking something along the lines of the East to West Alta 2400KTH, or the Grand Designs Momentum G23.  Small enough to enjoy the state parks, comfortable enough to stay in for extended periods, while exploring different areas of North America.  Most importantly capable of hauling the sidecar rig.

Any of you try this?  Experiences, thoughts, advise greatly appreciated. 🍻

My question is always how wide is the opening and how wide is the rig.  My rig is such that no toy hauler will ever let the rig fit. Displeased Unless I were to get a heavy duty truck based toy hauler… I Dont Know

Great point!

Did some measuring, and both SYZ and the new "Speedy & Spyder" rig will fit.  But before plunking down hard earned duckets, the dealer would have to allow a test fit session.

ETA: only one rig fits at a time. So only one rig will go for the adventure. *

SYZ is a tight fit with the left side handle bar slightly over the counter top.  Tie down may require fab'ing a removable floor plate with chocks.  Thankfully I know a guy with a welder. 😉

Scott,  I have to ask,  because you left so many blanks...

Do you want a Toy Hauler trailer, or 5th wheeler ?

Do you still have the pickup, to haul this future Toy Hauler ?

What about a 21' Class C motor home, with a BearTrack aluminum trailer towed behind it ?

Hi Miles,  Travel Trailer Toy Hauler is the way I'd be looking to go.  Still have the truck.  No interest in a motor home.

  • Travel Trailer in length under 30' and 12' tall fits pretty much any park.
  • Provides maximum flexibility of the sidecar and truck for local transportation without "breaking camp."
  • The openness of a trailer creates a comfortable living experience for extended stays.

The goal is to spend six months to a year or so in a specific area of the U.S. (like the northeast for example), and really get to explore the area.  Then move on to another area of the country.  I did this for a year and a half with the 5th wheel, and had a lot of fun.

Another option is to just rent a place for six months to a year or so.  That has advantages (especially during winters), but most folks want to have a long term tenant, so short term places are a bit harder to find.  Add a dog, two vehicles plus the utility trailer and the options get a bit limited.  Also doesn't provide the flexibility to head home at any moment, without severe cost penalties.   I did this for a year in Heber, UT.  that worked out really well.  So not something I'd rule out over buying a travel trailer.

Love the idea of a long term rental!! We are hoping to be able to do this one of these days! Glamping is nice but nothing beats a bed/big bathroom/good kitchen and... a garage to work on the rig! Travel trailer/RV/Toy hauler make you sad when not in use the rest of the year while taking a lot of space!

New here to the forum, but I have hauled a lot of bikes in toy haulers and flat trailers. Even if you can get it in the door/ramp/etc make sure you can move around the rig. You need to get on and off to move it, you need to get tie-downs on and off, etc. I will say that 6 foot wide enclosed is very narrow for two bikes, 7 foot works and 8 foot is best for what I did. I am sorry I can't give a great answer for a rig as I don't have one yet.

Really, really great points!  Thank you Sir!   🍻

I, like others, am concerned about width. Bessie is 76" X 8 feet, and I looked into many travel trailers, only to find a few that would work. The Go Play Wayfinder brand from Bish's had a nice 29' (as I recall) that was a really decent deal. There are a few with a very similar floorplan with the walk around queen up front. (A requirement of ours.) I found that for my large hack, it was going to be difficult to find a light rig my Ranger could tow, (7500 GVW) and still be able to access the living area on the road for an over night stop. The length required was going to limit access to some of those wonderful National park sites. Also the side windage, even with a good weight distribution hitch w/ swaybar, would make for tiring drives. A larger truck will help, of course, but I opted for a nice used Bigfoot Motorhome I am bringing back up to snuff and the Bear track trailer, for either my sidecar rig or the Suzuki Jimny, when I bring a dinghy along.

Here's a link to the floorplan we liked the most and is out there from several builders with a few variations. The Dune Sport built trailers enjoy a great reputation for being well built and if you're willing to move the rig out for the night or crawl over it I seem to recall the Ibis and NOBO brands had a nice narrow one.

I don't know that this style would fit your extended stay parameters, but they are out there and when I was looking awhile ago there were some good deals.

Great input!  Thank you Sir!  I will take a look.  😎

I was doing some YouTube surfing last night and ran across another possibility.  The Stryker series of toy hauler travel trailers.  They have a N/S bed (walk around is important here too), at just under 30'.  Need to do a lot more research on them.  Never heard of Cruiser or Stryker before last night.  So I'll spend a bit of time checking them out.

We built a toy hauler from a 7x12 utility trailer.

We've pulled it around the USA a couple of times so far. Has

been a good solution for us.We have an F150 with a rooftop tent

that we sleep in but have emergency cots we can setup if required.

It's a double axle with brakes.

We've put Solar and 200AH of batteries in, water, and a porta potty.

Added shelves and tiedowns for all our camping gear and the bike/sidecar.

That sure is a nice setup!  Well thought out.  😎  👍
