A Happy New Year to all you pilots out there!

I've been very remiss in not posting and replying in the Forum. The truth is, I've been "distracted" for almost the last 8 months working with my builder to complete my rig. But, what a great way to begin the new year, see what the stork brought to my garage early this morning (Note: The link below will take you to the ADVrider website, where I have posted some pics and info about my new R1200GS/EZS Rally "L" "enduro rig"). It's almost done!:

WOW! Mike, are you looking to be the first rig to the top of Mt Everest? I think you could do it with that outfit...

Well, as it so happens (and I kid you not), although scaling Mt. Everest isn't in the cards, Helge Pedersen (founder of www.globeriders.com) and I are working on a pre-run (for a commercial tour in 2007) that we intend to conduct in SEP/OCT of this year (2006). On our most western leg, we have been given permission to take our bike/rig to Mt. Everest Base Camp (aka "EBC") on the Tibetan side.... I'll post some pics if we make it !

Cool! Good luck! Pete showed me your rig in the early stages when I dropped mine off. It sure didn't look like this then. But it was looking good. I sure like what he did to make it easy to ship separated then reassemble. Impressive.

Mike,
Pete walked us through a tour of your rig this summer when it was black, gelcoat and still under the knife.
Between the two of you (and EZS) you've come up with a skookum piece.
I really like that you chose the "Royal Hawaiian" Colors for the finish product. That's class.

Hey Lonnie -

Thanks! Now a question for you, any ideas on how to add a reliable reversing system on a rig like this, even it if is electrically driven?

No ideas for a reverse drive.
There are some working on different types of electric driven reversers here on the forums but they are quite complex and as far as I can tell still in the R&D process.
Another drawback for your purpose is they lack ground clearance as installed, judging from the visuals.

You'd think some engineer would come up with a system for bikes like the old Mercury outboard motors had where you could run the engine backwards to reverse.

(You heard it here first!)

Be careful where you park it and carry a come-a-long off road or hook up an ATV winch 🙂
One winch is sufficient..you can have two mounting points. Did I mention 'car battery'?

Excellent points! I bought a small hand-operated ATV winch for "recovery" if I get myself into a bad "parking" situation. And, I'm planning on putting a 2nd/auxiliary battery in the car's trunk. This will be connected via a SurePower Battery Separator/Interconnect.

I actually do have two batteries on mine. No fancy hookup though I just switch them around when desired. The extra one works really nice in camp. I have been amazed to find so few people realize you can just put a 12v bulb in any old extension cord. 🙂

I may be adding reverse to my next bike which will be a 2WD rig using a R1200GS and a Ural sidecar. I have looked at a few ways of driving the jack shaft to the sidecars drive wheel.
