I"m thinking of putting a steering dampner on my rig as I get a little wobble at times on decel but not always...40 psi in the tire...head bearings tight....I have heard that a VW dampner is what some have used....JC Whitney has several.....which one should I use or is there any big difference in the ones they offer..... or does anyone have a part # for one from Auto Zone or Advanced Auto.....Thanks Steve

There are two different lengths of stroke. One has a little over 6" the other is over 7".
As I recall the earlier model beetles used the longer stroke damper.

I don't know what the difference is, but have always been told to specify the Super Beetle one. That's the one I used on my Goldwing and on my Yamaha 850. Those were the only two rigs I ever felt needed one.

OK I'll look at that one.....BTW will adding a dampner make steering harder???or just take the wobble out...like I said it don't happen often but would hate for it to wobble at a bad time....LOL...ya know what I mean????.....Steve

You'll only feel it at very low speeds, like maneuvering around a parking lot. If you spring for the expensive ones, most are designed that there is little or no restriction until a jarring force is applied. http://www.scottsperformance.com/Stabilizer_Info.php or http://www.pit-bull.com/steering-stabilizer-types.shtml.
For most of us a $30 VW one is worth the low speed struggle.

The V-Dub unit will definitely slow your steering down and add some resistance to your steering. I won't use one unless headshake is uncontrollable.

MMmmmmm may not need one then.....only happens if I am slowing down and hit a bump just right...not often...maybe I'll just live with that unless it gets worst.....Thanks Steve

I have a damper on my Harley rig. The damper is identical to the early VW Beetle. Harley apparently uses the same source. They are made in Brazil. The HD model is around $129 and the ones in the afermarket catalogs are under $30.

I like a damper because it makes the steering slower and more predictable.

All Evo and later Harleys with factory sidecars have the V-Dub style of damper installed. The case is the same as the VW but with different valving. It definitely slows down the steering which I found was cumbersome with it installed.
However it will also help to slow down the steering on front ends with raked trees. Some feel the steering is too quick after this modification has been done. I prefer the raked trees without the damper for quick, easy steering.

As usual, you have aroused my curiosity. In what way is the valving on the auto store type Brazilian VW dampers different from the ones sourced from Harley-Davidson?

I have several units from both sources and I can find no difference in length, mounting, stroke, or pull, tested with a large fishing scale. The rate appears to be the same as well.

Thanks in advance.
