Velorex 563 on a Road King New at this need some help Thanks
Just bought a 2001 Road King with a 563 Velorex on it rides pretty well my concern is the way the side car was mounted.
Lower front mount is pushing the floor board up upper front mount is at a severe angle & pivot points have been welded solid
i believe they were trying to keep it from pushing the floor board up even more when the side car moves. The one rear
mount is welded to the upper shock bolt so you have to leave the sadle bag off. I have great concerns on the safety of
this rig the way it is mounted does any one have any pictures of one mounted on Harley Road king Eletra Glide Etc.
And i also would like to a few items for it
Thanks
Patrick
Patrick,
The Velorex sidecars are not, I repeat, NOT to be used with the heavy ElectraGlides. Even the late Velorex Tour models are too light for these motorcycles. You need a heavier sidecar for your bike with larger diameter mounts.
The 563 Tour works with the lighter cruiser bikes but are not safe with the heavy touring models, whether Harley or other heavy touring motorcycle.

It does seem to be a very light weight frame & mounting set up i was planing on strengthening the frame & fabricating a stronger mounting system
since i have side car already.
It's your butt !
I still don't think this is the way to go. If you want to keep the body style, mount it on a URAL or other heavy sidecar chassis.

Fair enough do you have any frames for sale
Thanks
While the Velorex is a great little sidecar for LITTLE bikes, It does not belong on your Road King!!!!! This is not a safe match up. By the time you make it safe about all you have left is the body. Why not sell the Velorex to some one with a small bike and start over? Saftey must come first! The frame is to light duty, The mounts are at best not very well thought out, the wheel is to light duty, the shock is to light duty while you could repalce all of these items you are starting to get to the price of a different sidecar. For what you could get selling the Velorex plus what you would spend fixing it to work on your bike you are much better off starting with a sidecar designed for bikes as large as yours.
If you really want to put a different frame under the sidecar, we sell a proper frame as well as real NOT universal mounts for your bike. The frame with all proper mounts runs $2595. Or you can buy the entire Kenna sidecar with mounts for $3695. Or you can go with the much more popular sidecar for your bike the M72C which is much easier to get in and out of and has a trunk that opens from the out side and locks. Both of these sidecars you can order with a brembo disk brake, while brakes may "just slow you down" this can be a real good thing. The Velorex brake is difficult at best to make work and feel right with a bike that as disk brakes.
For your bike in addition to the proper bike specific mounts we also offer triple tree's to lower the steering effort and reverse for the transmission.
Even if you discount the fact that your Velorex is not a safe match up. It also does not and can not handle well. You will find a sidecar that is a proper match up for your bike to also be more fun to ride. With proper mounts the sidecar will not be moving around and as such will handle better. Also you can keep your saddle bag you however do loose the pocket from the in side of the right lower fairing

Wow, Patrick, it didn't exactly start out well huh?
Regardless of how things turn out and the decision you make, WELCOME!
I'm sure the guys and gals here can help you get things together for a real good rig with lots of enjoyment in it, hang in there!
Welcome, Patrick.
Lonnie and Jay are the best of the best when it comes to sidecars and the installation thereof, much can be learned from them. We've done a couple of Velorex installs on heavier bikes at my shop and they required much modification to be roadworthy and in the end they cost as much to install as a proper, heavier sidecar. We will not be doing that again; now for bikes 650cc and over we recommend more robust sidecars such as those offered by Texas Sidecar and DMC. But regardless of what make of sidecar chosen, we NEVER advocate the welding of mounts directly onto the bike's frame.
Thanks every one for all the great advice i ended up buying a Ca Friendship 1 to replace the Velorex.
Jay at DMC is going to fab up the correct mounts for me along with a few other items - Thanks Jay
Ill keep every one dated on how it all works out
Smart move. Don't forget to put some ballast in the FSI at first. It's still not a real heavy sidecar at 205#.
