Ural sidecar conversion and body work

I have a CJ sidecar (Chinese version of the Ural) on my rig. My wife has knee problems and we are trying to come up with a way to convert the car so that it is easier to enter and exit. I am trying to design a way to lower the door frame and/or to have the front of the sidecar would raise up and forward like some sidecars do (such as the SECO Spalding). Has anyone ever seen or heard of such a conversion being done? I am going to visit some local body shops and welders to ask their thoughts. I love the classic look of this rig and I want to stay with the Ural sidecar. Any ideas and thoughts are welcome. 🙂

Johnny Sweet in Greer SC may be able to help you out. Here is a thread on some of his work.

Hi Roy: OldSchool beat me to it. I too am thinking you will need an inside subframe to brace the halves and mount the hinges. Maybe pad them with a strip/pads of rubber and latch the halves on each side to prevent wiggle and unexpected opening. Maybe someone has pics of an Sputnik sidecar which opened in similar fashion. Sounds like an interesting conversion.

I suspect if you try to make the access opening larger you will need to again build an inside subframe to prevent flex in the body.

Good luck. We want to keep Mrs. Roy riding. 🙂
