Trailer Hitch Help
Hello again, I am in the process of making a hitch to haul a small camper, I have square tubing about 5' long to mount on the sidecar mounting brackets, I read in past posts someone made something similar, only thing I worry about is the distance between the ball & where the square tubing is connected to the sidecar mount, about 32", thanks in advance for any help or advice.
It'll be out there by itself for quite a ways Doc.
I suppose a brace back on an angle to the bike could be fabricated for more lateral stability it needed. Possibly using heavier wall material would be a good idea?
If going to the sidecar with a brace it would probably entail a plate inside and out to spread the load placed in the general vacinity of where the sidecar mounts are at.
You coudl call Motorvation on this as I am pretty sure they have dealt with it in th epast.
Another thought woudl be to just put the hitch on the bike with a bend in it to move the ball toward the sidecar.
When this thing is being built keep in mind that you probably want to maintain th eadjustabilty of the sidecar.
(Note that this is a Motorvation Spyder Sidecar so it has no conventional sidecar frame)
I made 2 hitches for 2 different SC's.
A terraplane and a Motorvation FII. both different approaches.
the MVFII is seen here..
the SC frame has a square 1 1/4 channel on back, perfect as a receptical. made a square steel insert to fit tight and added a store bought hitch the right height, to it. wiring with plug goes thru the hollow channels ...perfect! plug also stores awy in it.
the TP i made a long square channel like youy mentioned and bolted it to the SC front and rear frame pylons going to the bike. I also added a reinforcing member bolted to the rear bumper, which was strong 2" round steel tubing.
