Tire sizing question
My tug (a Moto Guzzi) specifies a 110/90 x 18 front tire. The outfit handles reasonably well (I'm new to sidecars, but the rig seems stable; however, it will oscillate when slowing tho' only if I take my hands off the bars)
Would I have any problem with a 100/90 x 18?
TIA--Rich
The oscillation you mention Rich is very common with outfits. You can play with tire pressue , tighten steering head bearings and maybe play with toe in a little to see if it will go away. You may find that as you do this it does not leave but maybe begins and ends at a different speed. Hard to say. Some install dampners that will stop it. Adding a dampner is okay but if it makes steering harder then you may feel you turned one issue into another one.Personally I prefer to just deal with the wobbles and keep my hands on the bars.
The tire size you mentioned should be no problem.
I'd read about the oscillation being common and only noticed it for the first time (I must have a couple thousand miles on the rig now) the other day when I took my hands off the bars for a few secs--this is not something I ordinarily do. That's the only time it's an issue and of course it's made worse by a rough road surface. I can deal with this minor problem and probably won't try to dial it out because the outfit behaves well otherwise.
I figured that small difference in tire size would be okay, but I wanted to check. Thanks for your comments.

Sounds good Rich. So many people get all excited and stick a steering dampner on when it is really not needed. You are on the right track. I would still suggest that you may want to tighten the steering head bearings though. Sidecar outfits are just happier that way 🙂
Hey People,...
I had the HD dealer install the Liberty rake on the Ultra Classic rig and they left the damper on? The rig runs great as far as I know, but I’ve read it may be unnecessary to keep the damper on and am a little reluctant to remove it, I may take it off just to see if there is a noticeable difference later on though, ( Tom Wells wrote awhile back of a shimmy at medium speed on his HD )…
Just a note;
sometimes it’s a little hard for me and I suspect others also, to follow what’s being said here unless we pay close attention to the particular rig size/weight/model being discussed.
The Claude! Control Issues revisited thread would also be an example.
Please don’t take offense by anything I post people, usually I have a grin on my face when I type this stuff, and I’m not sure if it’s cuz I’m so damn funny or if it’s just from watching my fingers flow over the key board like they should on a newly tuned Yamaha..
Duck……
karrooozzzing along on the waters surface…. paddling like hell under it.
Duck,
When Pete installs his trees he takes the damper off.
Try it, You'll be glad you did. Put a chrome shield where the fork mount was and mount air horns or a driving light on the stock end bracket so it doesn't just look like a loose appendage.

Hi Duck-
It was mostly just a matter of getting enough miles on the Liberty to be used to the way it handles versus the way the Ural did. It does have some lower speed shimmy but that's easily controlled. It's just it's nature and not a problem once I know what to expect. I love it and sure like being able to cruise all day at 70 or faster if I want to. Although it would be nice to have a Ural or other dual sport outfit with a Ural car sitting in the garage for an occasional off road venture but for the hiway this one is fabulous! Arch and I made a great ride yesterday over to the Coeur d'Alene area. Super day it was. Back to work today...
Awright then!
The damnpers comin off. You with me on this Guzzi
Tom, I’ve seen some photos of that gorgeous country,,, maybe some day??
Gonna go up to Turners Corner tomorrow for lunch, rumor is the new owners are trying to romance Ara (Beemerchef) into taking over,,...hope 🙂 🙂
The Guzzi California series (Jackal/Bassa/V11 EV) all come with dampers from the factory. They're not great units, but I'm leaving mine on for the time being tho' it is at a low setting.

Come on out!! Lets spend a month or so seeing how much better reality is than photos! Don't have a month? Couple weeks maybe??
Hey Tom, thanks for the invite, maybe next year. Wish I had a dime for every time I said that:)
I think I’ll sneak over to that Control Issues thread and ask em if you can set a rig up to break loose and slide rather than bring the hack wheel up, I remember seeing something where a guy was burning donuts with his rig. (and no,Beemerchef,I don't mean cooking them on his bike.)
