Hello Friends,
the heart transplantation for Jolly Roger 2 started.
Yesterday I scraped the engine parts of the future heart of my Jawa rig into shape.
After someone elses ugly welding of the Husquarna 450 housing, the clutch plate and the housing wouldn't lign up well and the kickstarter didn't want to turn at all...
So, some prussian blue a straight edge, 2 scrapers and 3 hours of patience later the result was good. The Husquarna importer, a grandson of one of my oldest clients, was amazed how with such a low tech craftmanship you achieve such precise results. Well, his grandfather hired me many times over the last 22 years just for that. And this young fellow didn't have even a clue about the technics.
A electric starter arrived and the cylinder head got rebuilt y and now the engine can be assembled. The design of the whole 450 motocross engine is completely out of my experience. extremely lightweight Titanium valves, a flat disc carburator with electronic position back feed, ball bearing cam shafts, a 4 inch piston as "tall" as an ash tray.

Today together with my son we tied down the suspension into normal driving position before we first took measurements for future references, then we took off the sidecar and started to strip the bike. Tomorrow will follow the Jawa engine.
How vulnerable looks a naked bike!
Poor girl, Wendy >(her name when she is without the boat)
Photos follow another day.

Now I cannot sit still for to see the results. 😉 😉
Sven

Back in ancient history, late 60s, My Jawa250cc single with twin exhaust ports and pipes, broke a con rod which thrashed around so as to pretty much tear the engine apart.
I couldn't get parts so I swapped it out for a honda 305 engine. It worked so well that I built an off road platform hack for it and learned to enjoy sidehacking. I've been at it ever since.

Phelonius,
Well, something like the experience You told the other day, hopefully will wait for me too. The 350 Jawa was 29 hp and the Husquarna is supposed to be 48 hp.
I'll pass from 4 to 6 gears and from aircooled 2 stroker to a watercooled 4 stroker.
I hope that I finally will get some compresion breaking when I'll push downhill.
What I pray for is, that the 49th horse, the crazy nut that connects the handlebar with the seat will be able to control his right hand and not start to drive as a brain amputated nut.
After years of constant repairs I wish me a long lasting engine and more riding miles then repair hours...
Let's wait and see.
Sven

Sounds great, Sven, hoping the very best results for your considerable project there!

Yes, Phelonious, strange the mysterious route that leads us to where we are. Not real sure how I got here, truth be known, but there's a KZ1000P-15 sitting here needing a sidecar so who am I to argue?

Just be sure and have fun whatever you're doing, guys!

Today we pulled out the engine. only 45kg and 4kg each muffler. The frame feels nearly as light as a bycicle... poor girl.
The space seems to be plenty for the new engine. We'll see that when the engine will be delivered.
But we found one thing that made me think a lot. The carburator needle was in its lowest/leanest position. A thing that might be interesting for Igor in Poland. The strange carburator settings I mentioned a few weeks ago probably were result of a too lean mixture and one reason for elevated engine temperatures.

Gavin, the Jawa and before the MZ rig were "adult" 2 stroker engines but both had the same problem. Good design, lots of torque, but problematic electrics and bad materials for the engine and way too little cooling for mountain range and tropics.
The materials Jawa uses for its frame parts does surprise me each day. specially the main beam for to conect bike and sidecar. looks so flimsy thin, but is a extremely strong forged part. Just like the tiny 15mm axle in the sidecar wheel is lasting heavy abuse now for 9 years something like 22.000km on the worst mountain roads You can imagine.
The Tschecks have always been excellent in metalurgics and I love their lathes and mills. allthough sturdy but well designed and acurate. way better proportioned then Bridgeport.

More tomorrow.
After a VERY harsh encounter with a supposed to be electritian in the morning I decided to leave for a couple of days my clients alone for to relax in my own shop together with my son and work for my own family. If the clients want to contract Bloody B...'s they will have to pay the hospital bills and indemnisations alone, I will step out.
The only treasure we can take into the grave is a calm conscience. I want to keep mine clean.

Last Friday the Husquarna engine got ready. I will be able to pick it up after the transfer comes through. Bankers are slow...US Dollar from a German account to CR will take perhaps again 5-8 days.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel!
Since oktober only 2 or 4 wheels leave a mark. No free body building.

Sven, replacing 2-stroker with 4-stroker is one of the best gifts you can give to your bike (and thus, to you), just like disc brakes. I did the same to my Jura (Ural-style bike megamix on Pannonia frame).
Congratulations. Post a photos as you do anything in this project. And fight the maniana seed in you 😀

Today on my 23rd marriage aniversal I picked the Husquarna engine up. (Fotos another day)
In the morning single and return trip on the KLR solo bike something like 15km one distance =>20mi=30km round trip was about 1h.
At 10am with the van the round trip driving time was 3 hours without the paperwork.
My sugar level went down and the headake lasted until 5PM.
You have no idea how I hate downtown. On a day like this I'd love to close the shop and leave the country.
But now I see a light in the tunnel of the rig-less time and Easter I'll see German autobahn again...

Makeing a first foto I got an idea for the new bike creation:
"Rotkäppchen"="Little Red Riding Hood/Little red cape"="Caperucita roja"
Until now the Jawa's name as single was "Wendy" and assembled "Jolly Roger 2"
I guess "Rotkäppchen" as single and "Jolly Roger 2 1/2" might be appropiate.
Sven 😉

PS: I made fotos and forgot the transfer cable in the machine shop... I must become old:
Grandma used to say: "Who doesn't have it in the head, for sure has it in the legs."

We will be visiting several University towns in Middlegermany from Frankfurt over Kassel, Göttingen, Hannover, Braunschweig, Marburg, Berlin, Erfurth for the incredible time of 8 days.
Not even my mother or brothers and sisters will see us.
The idea is to find out where to continue studies for my kids. So God will, in about one year, we will settle somewhere for a few semester where Highgerman is spoken.
That is the plan. Later we will see what destiny has planed. For me I have lived for long enough time in Costa Rica and find University is the last change to teach German heritage to my family.

A few minutes ago I unloaded the van and without even takeing off the old Jawa engine holder plates it was easy to lift the Husquarna engine into the frame.
Lots of space.
Points that will need some fiddleing are:
The kickstarter base will need that I will have to cut off the tip of the upper right back ear of the frame's plate.
The 2 loop frame will possibly call for a minor different routing of the muffler bows.
The air filter box will need to be a invent of my own.
So there is plenty to play after easter.

Enjoy it.
I did laught during the whole soccer game yesterday. The snow match USA, Costa Rica was fun to observe.
So hopefully the back game will be under a neat tropical thunder storm and You will have no right to interupt it neither!!!!
LOLOLOLOLO
The commentor said in the 53 years as soccer commentor he never ever has seen the Costa Rican national team play in snow. For that they behaved pretty well.
Hopefully they will not be ill on tuesday against Jamaica.

By the way it was my 6st game I watched completely in my entire life. The last was Costa Rica Camerun in 2003 or so.
