Sidecar wheel no lead on HD. Thoughts?
I'm in the info gathering stage before my next rig (to replace my now-gone Dnepr). I see that the Harley factory sidecar rigs have the sidecar wheel on the same axis as the bike rear wheel.... no lead. Is this a detractor to HD sidecar handling? I have had several Harleys starting in the mid seventies up till recently....not with a sidecar though, and liked them all. How does a HD rig compare to the driving characteristics of my Dnepr? Seriously.... Thanks, Hal
Most Harley factory sidecars carry about an 8" wheel lead, at least for the last few decades. I know mine does.
They may have been even in the old adjustable length axle days.
The earlier models with adjustable triple trees and later model with raked trees handle very well.

Hal,
This might be a good place to poke around and ask queastions, look at other folks' rigs too... Where are you located in New England...?
Best,
Rob

I'm in Canton, CT. I am planning to go to the meet.....but I will be on two wheels I think. My military Dnepr is still in rough "as used in khazakstan" condition. I have a nice 2000 R1100RT-P Police BMW. I'll bring my title. Maybe I can trade for a rig? Below is a link to my picture hosting spot. Pics of my bikes are there. Regards, Hal

thanks for sharing the pictures. You live in a beautiful state.
Dont get caught in Mass. with blue lights unless your a P.O.! Happened to me with blue running lights. Fined!
Why dont you put a SC on the Beemer? It would look great with a Ural or Harley style SC on it..... great conversation piece!
lots of power, smooth, comfy with the solo saddle.
My MV Spyder needs a home.
My Beemer cop bike is a solo.
I'm Looking for a sidecar rig.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
There must be some logical way out of this dilemma.
What could it possibly be ??
The R1100RT-P doesn't seem like a sidecar hauler to me. Lots of body plastic, and it doesn't have that old-style frame I like (actual tubing in a conventional old frame layout). I've always liked older stuff. Wouldn't the spyder be kind of small for it too? Hal
That's a drag. I've seen lots of custom tail-lights with the blue dot in the center. I took the blue ones off and put red LED lights on it. I put two flashing LED as brake lights... they blink when the brakes are on. I have been rear-ended FIVE times in my car and truck. The last time was in my truck. I asked the guy that hit me "were you on the cell phone?" to which he replied "no, I just wsn't paying attention!". I don't want somebody to make the bike number six!
The R1100RT is a relative lightweight these days. The Honda shadow 600 is about the same weight.
I ran a MV Spyder on my 1995 Turbocharged Road King for quite a spell. No handling problems with 50# of steel barstock in the boot. Ran it up over a ton many times with and without a passenger. They are commonly mounted to larger bikes.

R1100 A lightweight?
I've been running my '73 R75/5 for last 4 years with a SC...first a Velorex 700,[too light] then a Vetter terraplane, now i have large Motorvation FII on it. never had problems with my R75/5 being a 'lightweight'
It cruises all day comfortably at 80 with a passenger..no reason or desire to 'do the ton'...tho it will with the '77 R100RS engine in it. pulling our large cargo trailer also.
Mike don't be so Beemerish,
I was referring to avoirdupois weight, not how wide their shoulders were.
In today's market the R1100RT at 563# dry is not a "Heavy" motorcycle.
An MV Spyder with 50# of ballast equals 240#. What does the Formula II weigh?
I've installed them on a couple of Roadstars (712# dry) but never weighed one.

Lonnie, name is Bob. heehee!
I cant find any weight for the FII either. but I know it is at least 240 empty. add the lean adjuster, trailer hitch, extras, all my junk in the trunk [jack, compressor, tools, tubes, top, jumper cables, rain gear,ETC] and it should top 275, plus passenger.
My R75/5 is considered a lightweight at 450 'dry'. the r1100RT is more in the middleweight class. 'Wings and Harleys, some big Suzukis, yamahas, are up there with the heavy weights.
Sorry Bob,
Those one syllable names all look alike to me. I got an excuse tho'.
I had to drop my specs off for new lenses today since they were all scratched up from trying to clean the road grime off in the rain. Now I'm not too good lookin'.
I even lost my favorite 12 year old skid lid during the trip.
All around bad day.
You can have your thread back now MBHal, Mea Culpa
