I've read a couple of different sources that say to go with 3 degree of rake, and then I've seen some that suggested more. Is 6 degrees too much? what is the optimum amount?

5 deg's seems to be the number used the most by the places that do it

5 or 6 degrees is the number most vendors have for Cruisers and most large Touring bikes. 3 would be for a bike with quicker steering like maybe a sports tourer that had less original trail.

So would a 6 degree set be too much on a sportster? the reason I ask is because I can pick up a set fairly cheap, but if that's too much rake to work then I won't do it.
Thanks.

Call Pete at Steerite and ask him, he's done hundreds of conversions and is a stright shooter, different head angles require different degree of modification to achieve the correct trail so the degrees will differ with different bikes.

6 degrees is fine on the Sporty for sidecar (only) use.
A little quick for solo use.
