Northwest sidecar
is it something i could do my self arenot
boat,
whatever you end up getting, make sure your wife
rides IN the sidecar, not on the seat behind you.
she said it looks like fun
Yup,
it is loads of fun! Sc's are VERY people friendly!
we get waves everywhere we go.
yesterday I gave an old freind a ride in my FII sc around his neighborhood. he had given up riding for health reasons.
first thing when we took off down the street, neighbors waved to us as we cruised by.
next block total strangers gave us a thumbs up, and my friend did the same back to them.
when we got back to his house,a few miles later, he was all smiles! ...said."wooo! I never got that kind on reactions from them on my solo bike! they all looked the other way!"
after that he was asking all kinds of questions about putting a SC on his K100 bike.
another convert!
I also installed my first SC on my bike, and the next 2 after that. it is not a big job, but make sure it is set up right, with pro[per mounting hardware. and...READ!!!and ask how to do it!

Try to find a Rally near you where you can look at a variety of styles and sizes. A Velorex might be ideal for you or you may want something bigger or more plush. Where are you located? There may be a rally or a rig near you that your wife could "try on for size:. :0)
houston tx do not see many around here
IAM NEW TO THE SIDECAR HOBBY WHAT IS THE WARNING IN YOUR COMMENTS ABOUT THE WIFE NOT RIDING BEHIND YOU ON THE BIKE./ THANKS DON FOX
Don,
It is a safety warning.
couples have ridden [do ride] 2 up on the bike, but it is a dangerous practice.
SC rigs are balanced with the weight of the SC and bike matching closely so they dont tip on right turns, driving carefully f course. SC weighs 1/3 of bike WITH driver.
When a passenger is put up on the back seat that extra weight up high will throw the rig [and the passenger] off balance on a right or left turn, but right turns are more hazzardous.
remember, SC rigs dont lean any more. when you go around a right turn your weight, AND the passengers, will shift to the left side. away from the turn, throwing the extra weight to the outside, making the bike unstable. It will also make the passenger lean off to the left side, making it more unstable.
with all the extra weight going to the outer side, the bike will have a much higher tendency to lift the SC wheel, and head for oncoming traffic.
picture this.... you are going straight down the highway at 60 MPH, wife on back seat enjoying the scenery...you spot a huge hole or critter directly in front of you, and swerve to the right suddenly. your wife , who was looking at the pretty lake going by is caught unaware by this suddem move, and is immediately thrown to the left , away from the swerve! if she is lucky, she grabbed onto something to keep from sliding off, but by this time all her weight is hanging off to the left side, making the bike VERY tippy!
A passenger can't be expected to watch the road 100 % of the time, as a driver does, [should], and can become very vulnerable in these moments.
some mention that they have arm rests on the back seat to keep the passenger on the seat, BUT.... the weight shift is still there! you are talking about an extra 120-200 pounds on the back seat...not a good thing at all!
best to put her and/or the kids in the tub for safe, mind relaxing riding.
Thanks for the info.Don Fox
If you (or a friend) are mechanically inclined, mounting a Velorex sidecar to your Star is easily within one days work.

Northwest Sidecar
We have many sidecars for this bike and have real bike specific mounts not the "universal" mounts that seldom work. Some sidecars are easier to get in and out of then others as some do not open (our Kenna $2495 and others) some have a cut down side (The Ural we import $2995) Others open like the Sputnik or Champion product lines which can be seen on our web site www.dauntlessmotors.com

We are also new to the side car thing. Didn't have a clue what we needed. Finally hooked up with Jay @ Dauntless and explained our intended use. We needed something to haul camping gear and a big dog on an extended tour. We have a Kenna with bike specific mounts for our 05 1200R Sportster. We have the hydraulic disc brake connected to the rear wheel master cylinder and dual discs on the front for some extra stopping power. Our fuel mileage is 42 to 47 depending on the wind. Spent most of the winter reading everything we could on operating the thing, especially this web site!!!! We set the bike / car up as if we were leaving on our trip tomorrow, in other words with all the weight in the car and on the bike. IF I had it to do again I would deliver the bike to Jay and let him mount & tweek the thing. But we have learned a lot by tackling the project ourselves. What each adjustment does and how the weight distribution affects the handling. Another thing to consider, we have no idea how the thing SHOULD handle as we live in nowheresville Idaho and have no one even close to ride and tell us what we need to do. Have ridden the thing about 500 miles and have found that it is a different world but a real hoot!!! We really need to take a riders course. Hope this helps some. steve
It's not what you do in life when you know what to do that makes nearly as much difference as what you do when you don't know what to do.
yes if you have very basic handtools a a 10 x10 flat service you can mount your own side car . But do some reading on sidecar setup first. My friend warkshop.com can help you too with attachment adapters. As he told me "doit your self that way you can adjust it yourself. Not his axact words.
