Mounting a California Sidecar on a Roadstar
Mount a California Sidecar to a 2002 Yamaha Roadstar 1600cc. Has anyone out there done this?
My riding buddy got the bug & found an early California Sidecar for $500. No bike mounts. The problem, I think, will be the rear top mount. As this bike is a softtail, the highest point would be around the passenger peg. Also, the front bottom has a bracket for the floor board and that looks to be a problem. Need input. Pictures and etc.
I rode a 1980 Yamaha 850 with a California sidecar for years. About 1990 I sold the bike and car. If I would have known prices were going up as they did, I would have rolled the car up to the barn until now. Going to have to wait till I find one like my buddy did.
Any & all help would be appreciated, thanks.
I have a 2005 Midnight Silverado I am trying to mount a Motorvation Royal car on. The upper rear mount is usually bolted to the cast frame flange under the seat. The peg area would be to low for proper triangulation. The front lower mount is the problem with stock pipes as the mounts I have seen all have to be tilted down to clear the pipes. On mine this is way to low. Speed bumps and some curbs won't clear. I have been thinking about trying a cross brace lower front mount bolted to the floorboard mounts like the crash bars ars mounted. Keep in touch as you work on yours I would like the input. Dick, dad@softcom.net
Looks to be to big a job the frame would have to be extended another 12 inches & new mounts made. My buddy just don't feel up to the task. Thanks.
Here are a couple of shots of a '01 Road Star/Velorex 700 installation.
The same mounting positions would apply for either the Motorvation or CSC cars. The main difference being the clevis or eyebolt type lower clamp mounts.
I don't have digital shots of a Road Star/Formula II setup but for the rear upper mount it was recommended to spot weld the clamp to keep it from rotation (slipping) since it was mounted at an angle.

Hack'n thanks for the pics,i read on another site that the offset should be 8 to 10 inches, this would have to be around 22 inches for the mounts to be close to the attachment points , it appears in the pictures that the offset would be greater than the 8 to 10 inches? also was the clevis strut bent for the upper front or is this a stock part? Cycle sidecar.com has a universal mount kit, would this be the kit i need? Thanks.
I put an old CSC on my 1976 R75/6. Perfect fit and I made it into a leaner also.

I think Cycle Sidecar sells the Velorex mount kits (for use on the Cozy to motorcycle installs). The Velorex Uinversal kit is all metric sizing. It uses eyebolts on all 4 mounts like Motorvation does but there's is a 1/2" SAE sized connection. The Velorex eyebolts are 12mm which is over 7/16" and under 1/2".
The curved strut on the 700 installation is fabricated. Since then we have lengthened the strut and shortened the clevis bolt length on similar installations. CSC uses a curved strut with SAE sizing. That might work for you.
The 8" to 10" (Ideal?) mentioned is not always possible to attain due to the vast differences in bike wheelbases and sidecar wheel positioning. I try to stay within 15% of the bike's wheelbase.
Less wheel lead will allow easier steering while more lead will enhance higher speed handling.
Also less wheel lead will increase tire mileage since there is less scrubbing in the turns.
