i find id really like to be able to carry more gas on my hd rig. im wondering about making a can that replaces the right side saddlebag - its really hard to access that bag, does anybody have any thoughts?

im thinking of a fuel pump in the side tank and a fuel line going along the sidecar frame and up to the front bottom of the hd tank and connect at the fuel crossover of the tank.

construction? safety?

Great idea for the tank , I have been looking for military ammo cans for 40mm cannons, they make awesome hardbags. So there is an idea for the saftey part. Maybe look into boat and race car fuel cells and wrap them in leather to look like a bag???

well in between the car and the bike its pretty hidden - it might look cooler clear coat aluminum - is brass a good material for a tank? hmm. brass can be tig welded - but will it crack from vibration? either way cost is a factor so my "plan" is entirely home made. steel is also a option but would need to be painted, but thats no big deal either.

what do folks think? steel? aluminum? copper?

i think the stock lower mount and a modified upper mount would work fine - and a extra layer of sheet metal with a air space on the bottom for heat protection

hmmm

There are plastic gas cans molded to fit into the Harley Hard bags. That's what I have, but I haven't ever needed it so far.

Tour Tank makes several options: http://www.tourtank.com/index.html
I have one on my rig. Significantly increases distance between gas stops. 🙂
Good Luck, gail

I picked up a plastic marine gas tank that holds 3 gallons of fuel. I mounted it on the rack behind the seat with a siphon bulb and a fuel line splitter. This allows a gravity feed. I also picked up an athletic duffel bag to keep it out of view. This is a very inexpensive way to go.
