Is HD rear fork bracket weldable on a bagger?
Wondering if it is cast steel or malleable iron. Need to know if I can weld to it?
This is the bracket that holds the swing-arm rubber mounts to the frame, often the rear footboards mount to it.
Thanks.
Joe
Joe,
I don't think iron castings are in use any more on the Harleys. You might try hitting an area with a high speed grinder. If you have a few yellow sparks it's cast iron. A bunch of bright sparks, it's steel. The more carbon, the more sparks.
(Up there in Colville you can probably find an old piece of farm equipment to practice on.)

This bagger is an old piece of farm equipment.
Thanks,
Joe
Why weld on your bike at all when it is so easy to bolt on hardware?

We were having issues with the stock exhaust interfering with the sidecar bracket that we had fabbed up some years ago.
The simple fix was to combine the two brackets into one. This allowed for clearance so the rear stock pipe did not contact the lower bolt head of the rear swing-arm bracket.
The rear swingarm bracket is cast steel and welded nicely. Life is good.
