HD Cruise Control
Howdy,
I have an '05 Ultra Classic Electra Glide with the 88" engine and a TLE Sidecar. The bike is geared way too high and often can not pull 5th gear. I am planning to change the final drive ratio either with a larger pulley at the rear wheel or a smaller pulley at the counter shaft.
Does anybody know if this will affect the cruise control on this bike? If so is there any way to correct it with a lower gearing or will I just have to live with it?
Thanks,
Nelson
It well only change the speeds it can be set at, I would think.

Nelson, I don't know, but I've read, that's its easier/better to change the gearing on the big twins by changing sprockets for the primary chain between engine & transmission. This way the speedo is not affected. I lowered the gearing by 4% on my Sportster with an aftermarket smaller front pulley - speedo is now off by 4%.

Lee,
I hadn't thought of that. Of course, if it made me think I was going faster I would probably be happy...
Thanks,
Nelson
some years its real easy to change the primary ratio - pre 06 falls into that category - you may have to get a shorter primary chain if you go real small.
some folks used a baker 6 speed trans with a stock primary chain [rather than the baker overdrive primary] to get good solid low gears.
07 and later the only choice is trans sprocket and rear pulley. the current hd trike ratio is trans 30 tooth and rear axle 70 tooth - you can get a sportster sprocket at 68 and a trike trans and the combination is pretty cheap.

I did my 07eglide with 30--70 lots of power 10mi slower at60 reads70 going to change to 32--70 to put me in the power band at 55 to 65 will need longer belt
i know the trikes use 30 70 - with 15" rear tires, i wonder if the tune is different - all the hd tuner info says *except trikes* so there must be something different. they have the stock cam and wind out in the 3k range.
the biggest problem is that the words *longer belt* mean BIG trouble, there is something no good about the aftermarket belts, they seem to be just good enough to sell a bike and don't last. lots and lots of noise on other web sites of how bad non oem belts usually are.
31 tooth sprockets ARE available but are about double the price of both the 30 and the 32.. sprockets is one place where the hd part is super cheap and very durable....
go figure
one thought I've had with trike gearing comes from my experience with VW gearing - the vans had super deep reduction - not so much for power but for cooling and lubrication, running the engine under the higher load, but at the higher rpm and thus a higher vacuum made the engines run cooler, and the volume per hour of oil was 30 percent higher going through the heads just from the rpm increase.
the two thoughts together have me scouring the swap meets to go to trike gearing with my ultra - tle combination.

I have a 02 Harley Ultra with HD sidecar and mine pulls fine on cruise. If you change the pulleys it will affect the speedometer and make it off but there is a way to fix that. I have a Baker DD6 in mine with stock gearing but 6th is 1 to 1 just like filth in a five speed. But I have a much lower first in second which is great when I am packet up trying to pull a dirt hill at a campground.
One day I am going to build me a torque motor just for it but the motor the stock motor is still running great at 96,000 miles so I might weight a while.
