Harley Reverse
When I first got my rig, I was given some parking advice -- Park head up. The method works good if you have hills around but we do not have many hills on the TX gulf coast. I went to the East Texas Sidecar Muster this month and just went nuts with Urals and their reverse gears -- Jealous as hell. So now I want a reverse gear for my ultra - Its just so uncool to push the rig!!!!! question is -- Which reverse kit ?
The lowest cost kit is on e-bay (MMD)-- for $1099 -- you get free shipping - free install tool - switch to kill engine if 1st and reverse are both engage -- made mostly in USA -- takes 3-4 shop hours to install.
All other kits range from $1300+ to about $2000 -- most require 3-4 shop hours and one requires 6-9 shop hours.
Does anyone have any comments on the reverse gear kits???
I used to use the limey model that Champion sells but I didn't like the idea of the "glue on" fit or cutting off the transmission shaft. If things get loose you can blow the gearbox.
I use the AIM Mamba setup now. I like the idea of the 2 shear pins (ala the old Johnson outboard motors). If you overload the driveline in reverse it shears the bronze keys and no damage is done to the gearbox.

Lonnie ---about how much shop time is required for installation of the Mamba kit? I too like the shear pin set up
It takes longer to remove and remount the hack than it does to install the Mamba reverse.
With a solo bike it's remove the pipes, side cover of the tranny, install the parts and reassemble.

I have the AIM MB003001 reverse on my HD Softail and am very pleased with its operation and its Japanese manufacturing quality.
I evaluated the Champion and determined it was to risky for usage.
Check the installation and instruction sheet in AIM's website.
I think you'll find the instructions and installation to be unintimidating.
I think it took me about 10 total hours for installation over the course of several winter weeks--lift bike, remove exhaust, loosen clutch cable, disassemble trans components, align, measure, think, install, think, measure, think, reinstall all parts removed, install new gaskets, adjust, etc---it is a hobby and passion so the time and money spent did not bother me.
They supply the necessary specialty tools.
Just be careful when you manually grind for the gear lock pin screws.
If you elongate the hole by accident, a dab of JB weld should take up the error.
Be sure to properly measure and locate the 'ding' on the exhaust pipe to accommodate the lever.
If you have aftermarket exhaust there might be a slight compatibilty issue.
I also added a little more trans fluid to take up the additional internal volume contributed by the AIM housing.
I am sure you will be very pleased with the AIM reverse.
