i keep bottoming out the front end on my bike

ive thought of several solutions

spacer - im guessing a inch? but dont want to get carried away and get coil bind

i have a used set of hd front springs - have thought about cutting two inches off of them and then put a washer on top of the factory spring, then a short spring and then the nut

heavier oil..

or new springs - possibly progressive - but its bux and a crap shoot if they will be heavy enough

any thoughts from anybody?

back ground is im about 360.. and it bottoms out on rail road tracks and bumps under braking - going down the road its fine - when it does bottom its really hard & that cant be good on anything especially the wheel and neck bearings

Has the bike been lowered? Screaming Eagle fork fluid is 20w, oem is 10w I believe. I run the S/E fork oil with good results, you could also disassemble the fork & check for worn/broken/misassembled parts and inclease your pre-load with a slightly longer spacer made from pvc...hope it works out for you.

the forks have about 12 k - all but 500 miles with the sidecar

im trying to avoid big outlays of cash - im in construction.. pout

taking the tubes out of a ultra is a PITA so im trying to work through the best low buck plan to stop the bottoming out before i do anything.

traxxon cartriges with 20 w , springs and long spacers would obviously be the best bet.. but its not going to happen this year

most likely ill do oil first and see what happens - it IS possible to change the oil with the fairing still on - have to take the key switch out and then remove the switch console and the top of the tubes can be reached. if oil does not do the job - then ill try spacers or spacers made from spring - if that doesnt do the job - progressive..

if i win the lottery traxxon - http://traxxion.com/detail.aspx

thx all for your thoughts

Hi,

I think either some new Harley springs or perhaps some Progressive springs would fix your problem. I don't think that spacers would overcome bad springs. I assume that your springs are worn out. My 2004 FL front end hardly moves when hitting bumps.

I think that changing cartridges would be very expensive. I don't think it's needed. Your problem is not a common one.....try new springs.
