I put a new wheel cylinder and brake shoes on my 96 Harley sidecar. I have the shoes and springs back on but can't figure out how to put the shoe hold down spring clips on. The manual says to put them on last, do I need a special tool? Thanks, Dave

Will brake spring pliers work?

No it is not for the springs but for the keepers that hold the shoes from moving out. I did a 59 pan a while ago same brake set up as yours. I have done many but it has been a while as I do not do them every day like I did 30 years ago. But my old brain tells me I think I put them on before the shoes.

Yeah, I think before the shoes may be the way to do it even though the manual says otherwise. I tried that first but I was knocking them off when I stretched the return spring so I looked at the manual and now I can't get them on. You need to spread the clip and push it in to the slot in the back plate somehow. Later I'll try putting them on first again.

Been working on Harley s for just about as long as I been riding them which is 42 years and I have seen a lot in the OEM manual that was not right. The OEM manual on mine cost me a inner fairing as they had two different torques for it in two different places and pulled out a insert.

Went to look at mine in the garage, it's all apart leaning against the wall with the drum off.
I would try to get them in first also. Seems they would help to hold the shoe so you can install the spring next.
I really don't see how you could get that clip to tuck in with the other end already on the shoe, no room plus to much tension.

I took things apart and put those clips on first. One of them wanted to fall off so I used some masking tape to hold it on while I hooked up the return spring. Everything is together and I'm bleeding the brakes now so should be done soon. Thanks
