First off, are plastic gas containers legal to hang on the side of a sidecar? Second, does anyone know any company that makes 2.5 gal. metal jerry can style fuel can? I'm looking for a way to carry extra fuel onboard my sidecar until I can manufacture a spare tank, under the basket and between the frame members. I want something that will not spill and/or leak. I already have some plastic type fuel containers, but they have a tendancy to leak, if they fall on their side and are way to wide to hang on the side of the sidecar.

Ural makes a nice one about that size. They also have a mounting bracket.

URAL 10 liter aluminum gas can.
3.85 gals.
They have a rack that fits but if the can rattles around in it they wear on the aluminum. Pad it if you use oneso it's tight.

Check your math, 10 liters is equal to 2.64 Gals. 1 liter is equal to .26417 Gals. Sorry! I couldn't help correcting your error or maybe your source is wrong.

Son of a gun, I believe you may be close to correct.
It's about 3.85 litres that equals a gallon.
My metric conversion chart (source) calls 10 litres 2.5974025 US Gallons.
It must depend on who you ask, Russkies or the Limeys.
I guess that's why we and the Canucks fought off going metric for so long.
At least we won since there's only one Quebec.

My 2ยข worth, I have always liked the "Moon" Tank, or spun aluminum, check eBay, they can be plumbed in, with senders, fuel lines, and quick disconects, all different sizes and shapes, and they do look really kool when polished. They also don't rattle around. The old skool California Hot Rodder in me I guess.

what id really like is a 2" thick tank that fits in the triangle of the frame of my tle - it would work out to 5 gals or so - double the range..

It would seem a tank 2" deep could have up to 20# of fuel sloshing around.
Could be tricky trying to siphon all the fuel out when in motion without getting a vapor lock if a pump is used. Even at rest it would be difficult to empty it unless the rig was at a specific angle in relation to the fuel outlet.
If price is no object a fuel bladder would work with this configuration.
Or for less $$$ a 2 or 3 gallon Tour Tank rests nicely on the luggage rack of the bike or sidecar and is easily removed when not needed.

Just a thought,

Lonnie

I got a 20L gas can and mounting rack from a Land Rover dealer. I like it very much, seems very sturdy and seals well. Watch out when opening it hot, however, as it builds pressure.

OOps that was a 10L can, not 20L.

Great prices! I used to deal with BP back when I had my Rovers. I never thought to look to them for a can and mount.

Unless they changed the rules, I would be a bit leary of a can not approved in all states. If you got pulled over or an overzealous traffic cop, you could end up paying more than you had planned on the gas can. Septor makes a DOT approved jerry can style gas can, It's made of some type of plastic, but it is safer than metal cans. This site has them and they are quite reasonable. Although they don't show the 10 liter can, they do carry them and is listed as a new product.

Go to your local marine supply or sporting goods and look at the replacement 2 1/2 gal outboard tanks, they have lay downs and upright models that won't leak once you plug the outlet hole or you could hook up a 12v fuel pump to it. In case you didn't know when you take your measurements for the tank take your HxWxl and divide by 231 to get gals.

I thought DOT only approved red fuel cans for gasoline.it is illegal here in WIS to fill a can with gas unless it is red.
whats with the blaze orange, sand, yellow??

Much as I dislike excessive "rules" some uniformity in motor vehicle regulations, not just for gas cans but also lights, etc., across States would be good.

So if they have to be red, it would appear that the Ural cans aren't legal everywhere.
