Extending forks

My Honda 1300 VTX/Ural rig only has 3" of ground clearance under the bike after the subframe was added. I have not had any problems yet but doubt I could get over a speed bump with it.

I was thinking of adding 2" fork extentions to gain ground clearance but wondered if that would adversely affect handling of the rig.

I have the rear shock set as high as it will go so only solution I know of would be to raise the front some.

Any ideas short of selling the bike and buying one with more ground clearance? I really do like the bike so that would be my last resort.

Thanks
Fred

Adding the 2" to the forks would definitely improve the ground clearance. The steering might be just a tad harder. Maybe not even noticable.
Taller rear shocks would also help.
A 1" total gain in ground clearance makes a world of difference on a sidehack rig.

Thanks Lonnie. I will go ahead and get the fork extenders. I haven't been able to find a longer rear shock but maybe I can find one off another bike that will work.

You might check with progressive suspension.

Hey Fred: You might contact Dave Gardner of Ikon Suspension USA thru www.ikonsuspensionusa.com. Dave recently worked with me to build a set of rear shocks for our almost road-worthy K100/EML rig. The shocks were not "off the shelf" as, not only as a result of the custom EML swingarm with different mounts on each side, but also because I requested a non-standard length to accommodate a tire change. The Ikon shocks worked great on our first test ride.
