Does any one have any idea what this is? I am looking at a 1983 Harley fltc that came with a side car by the numbers on the frame. I looked up the side car numbers and they do not match anything I have seen. The numbers on the frame member to the car is 1HDXSFX11E to10006. Their is a sticker attached to the car on the outside that says EXPERIMENTAL. On the inside of the car is a sticker that says NO Riders. The car appears to be full size with a smaller wind shield and wood grain side rails. I rode the bike and in the car and everything seems Ok although this was my first experience in one. Does anyone have any idea what experimental was in this year if in fact this was factory? The gentlemen selling this has no idea as he bought it from e-bay last year and did not pick it up from the owner himself. If any one has any info on this it would be greatly appreciated.

Harley has been known to do things like this. I worked on a 1978 CR1000 many years ago and it had oil pump gaskets that no Harley dealer ever seen as well as not listed in any service manual or parts book I have seen. Most oil pumps at the time used O-rings but this pump did not have the rescues for O-rings. The gaskets where metal with a rubber coating on them. Many Harley dealers told me that Harley would try things on motorcycle in real time and only the dealer that received a test item on a motorcycle would know about it.

Would like to see pictures if you can post some.

VIN. Vehicle number identification from the HD sidecar manual:

1 HD X SF X 1 1 E to10006.

(1) 1 = Market designation, domestic

(2) HD = Manufacturer = Harley-Davidson

(3) X = I assume this means experiment since the third designator is ordinarily an "8" for "sidecar".

(4 ) SF = This designator would ordinarily indicate the Harley-Devidson motorcycle model for which the sidecar was originally built. SF doesn't appear in the list in my manual. The list starts with SG which stands for TLE built for FLHTC/I. SK = TLE Ultra sidecar built for FLHTCUI.

(5) X = Ordinarily stands for engine type. Not applicable for a sidecar.

(6) 1 = Introduction date "regular. If 2 = "mid-year". If 3 = California.

(7) 1 = In this position is a VIN Check Digit. It can be 0 to 9 or X.

(8) E = Model year Ordinarily this would be a digit. For example, 6 = 2005, 5 = 2004, 4 = 2003, 3 = 2002, 2 = 2002, 1 = 2001, Y = 2000, X = 1999. Since it is "E", I assume it stands for experimental.

(9) T = Assembly Plant. T = Tomahawk. It appears that what the OP here typed as "to 10006 is actually"T 010006"

(10) Sequential number of sidecar. "010006" would be 10,006.

This sidecar is obviously an experimental model that got out into the public. Normally, HD experimental models are either retained at the factory or destroyed after testing. I've seen older Harley racers such as what would have ordinarily been a WR or WLDR with an "X" or a "XX" in the serial number.

A picture would certainly be very interesting. I'd like to see some.
