Hello,

I have a Ducati multistrada 620 and live in NJ. I was thinking about getting a sidecar for Sunday rides with my teenager, but have no idea where to start. I live in Morristown, ZIP 07960.

1/ Is there a instaler/dealer in the area that I could visit?
2/ Is it going to be so complicated and expensive (especially with a trellis tubular frame) that I would be better off buying a good rig on this site?
3/ Is it possible to detach a side car easily and be back to the original bike?

Thanks much. Paul

Hi Paul:

Re your first question. Can't help here.

I have a MTS 620 and like it lots. Dunno if it would make a very good tug, tho' for a couple of reasons. First, this isn't very torquey machine. At the very least you'd want to change the gearing, and second, I think you'd need a fairly complicated subframe.

Q3. Steering can be hard without some mods to the 3-trees. Unfortunately, that makes the bike handle poorly as a solo, so while some people mount/unmount their sidecars, I think you'd be better off with a dedicated rig.

Just my .02.

I believe the bike you have would make a very poor choice for a sidecar, you bike is designed to be quick and nimble in the corners and the rake and trail is a long ways away from what you would need to even come close to be able to turn it,,especially to the right, for the money you would have to invest you could get a rig that's already set up for your week end jaunts.

Paul, I have no experience with such a combination, but I suspect the comments are correct. Claude Stanley over in PA - www.freedomsidecars.com - should be relatively close to you to discuss your project.

Thanks much All.

That is what I suspected about the Ducati, but I wanted to make my due diligence. I am going to keep the Ducati as a stand alone motorcycle and go for the Guzzi rig for sale on this site. It is the kind of bike I like. I definitely keep Claude's web as a direct link. I am new at this and will require a lot of help.
Kindly
Paul

This is claude....lol.
Feel free to give me a call. I would happy to discuss your Ducati project IF you decide to carry though with it, or the Guzzi IDEA.
Ducati thoughts:
Sport bikes have reduced trail to help their 'flickability' in the twisties. This is a good side for sidecars as far a steering effort goes.
i don't really see a great cadidate for taking the sidecar on and off here though. I do see possibilitires for a decen tdedicated outfit though.
The trellis frame is not much more, or maybe less, of an issue than many of todays bikes present up with as far as sidecar attachment goes. We have done many BMW 1100.1150 and 12OO GS models as well as v stroms and sport bikes. So,Yes, it can be done.
Gotta say that the decision to go with the Guzzi may be a good one overall especially if this is your first outfit and the budget is a consideration. The wow factor of the Duc would be hard to argue though...lol.
Again, feel free to call. You will find I am much more of a sidecar enthusiat than a saleman 🙂
