3 Way Intercom
I've checked in on a few of the previous discussions about intercoms. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a 3 way intercom? Seems like some of the blue tooth ones should be able to do it. My wife would like to chat with my son and I while we ride. I'm good with the hand signals myself, but...
Any suggestions for a 3 way intercom?
Thanks,
Johnny
Looks like the Shark Blue Tooth Multi Interphone (SHKMBT88I) may be the ticket. Seems like trying to do it with the BlueAnt system, you'd have to use cell phones to connect more than 2. Anyone had any experience with the Shark Interphones? I can't really have a base station, as I'm on a 6 volt bike.
We've been considering the Cardo Scala Rider Q2 Multiset with claims you can match up to 3 headsets with a range up to 1640 feet, see: http://www.cardowireless.com/node/4886/features
But I have no experience with 'em, and haven't yet talked to anyone that's tried 'em. I did read a favorable review here: http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-intercoms/scala-rider-q2/multiset-q2.htm

I am using the Scala rider Q2 multiset and like it very much. We only use it for the two of us. According to the instructions there can only be two way conversations. You would need to buy a third set and your wife could set it up with you as her primary buddy and your son as her secondary buddy. You could do the same thing. My wife rides in the sidecar and it works great for us. When our kids were young we had a Goldwing/Oxford rig with built in intercom. We had 3 way conversations on it with the use of a J&M splitter. Instead of buying our 3 daughters headsets I rigged it up with an old CB microphone and small speaker. That way either of us could speak to all of them at once and they could use the Mike to speak to us. The mike had to be keyed so we did not have to hear what they were doing, and I installed a switch so they could not hear us if we did not want them to. As far as sound quality, I think the Scala rider is better that the Goldwing system, although my Goldwing was a 1988 model and I am sure they have been improved since then.
Sounds like the Scala Q2 may be the best way to go. The Shark BT Interphone seems to only have one speaker, and the individual units seems to differ from the multi pack headsets. By the time we'd buy 2 multi packs, we could get the 3 Scala Q2's for $50 more. Any more info is appreciated. This is certainly helping me out.
You can buy 1 Scala rider Q2 Multiset and a single headset. You do not need 2 multisets unless you think you want a spare, or want to set up a riding buddy with one to talk with you. By the way. The FM radio feature does not have a very long range. We sometimes hook up our I pod to it with the supplied cables. If you do this You will need a Boostaroo amplifier which is available from Radio shack for about $25. There are 3 outputs on the boostaroo, but your son will probably want to listen to his own music.
Yes we're on the same page. I can buy the Scala Q2 as a single and 1 multiset to have 3 total.
That's kinda nice that each person can have their own music wired in. My son's 4 (been in the sidecar for 2 years now 🙂 It sounds like one can bluetooth a mp3 player in. Not sure if you start running out of bluetooth channels when all 3 of us are connected?
Seems by the bluetooth specs, 3 voice channels is the max, and up to 7 devices can be attached. But I'm sure it's up to the manufacturer how they implement all that.

On my Goldwing all I have to do is add a Y-splitter at the passenger plug (which I've mounted on the right side) and run an extension over into the sidecar. This way all 3 of us can be on the system, use the intercom, cb, and music. I already have all the cables to do this.
Further reading while Christmas shopping revealed the Scala Multiset isn't "really" a 3-way intercom. From the User Manual at http://www.cardowireless.com/files/Q2-english.pdf :
In addition to the Primary Buddy pairing between the two units
in your retail box you can pair your headset with the Secondary
Buddy headset by repeating the above pairing procedure.
NOTE: Your headset can communicate with either the Primary
Buddy or the Secondary Buddy. However, neither
the Primary Buddy nor the Secondary Buddy can
communicate among each other directly via Intercom.
