The mounts for a 1983 TLE were designed for the earlier four-speed frame. Thus, the mounts, frame and main cross bar are totally different.

I did that once....I wouldn't recommend it. I mounted a 1980 TLE to a 1993 FLHS. That's a similar setup to what you are comtemplating. I got it done, but major changes were needed. I had to buy the connection kit ($800 at the time.....) to get the mounts that fit the 1993 FLHS. Then I had to rebend the front cross bar and make numerous other changes.

You would be well advised to locate a later model unit, say, 1998 and later, complete with mounts. If you get a new-enough one they have the disc brake and the wheel would be a closer match to your machine.

The rear mount changed from three bolts to two bolts in 2002, IIRC, so if you could get a newer unit, that rear mount would be the main issue.

I'd pass on that unit.....It's just too much work and it might have handling issues if not done perfectly. If you have to pay someone to do the work, it would be very expensive, too.

JMO.

EDIT: I just remembered, I did see such a setup with an early sidecar fitted to a later bike. The fellow had made his own mounts and had done a fairly good job without modifying either the motorcycle or the sidecar. The only problem was, it looked rather odd. There's something nice about having a rig that's at least "anatomically correct".

More of JMO.

Thx for the info..
I bought the unit pretty cheap and i belive its actually a 1990 version...
The owner had it mounted to a 2005 road king with some front mounts that were machine shop made, and an HD factory rear mount...
Not sure what is meant by 2bolt or 3 bolt there...i will photo it and post..
The vin # on it is
1HD85GX10JT010157 Hard to read, but i think i got it correct...
Would the 9th digit mean 1990?
I was told it was a police version from Ontario Canada

From the vin #, i break it down to a 1988 TLE manufactured at the Tomahawk plant.

You change the facts and I'll change the answer. That should fit if it was originally for a five speed, rubber-mounted FL bike.

The two-bolt or three-bolt rear mount is used to replace the original cover for the right side swing arm bolt. Frames prior to 2002 used three bolts and later ones had only two threeaded holes.

The Part Number for the later mount is 87114-93A (modified to "A" for 2002). They are something like $150 retail. Your brake pedal may or may not fit since the brake pedal was changed in 2002 to P/N 42407-02 to clear the sidecar frame. IIRC, 2002 was the first year of the "laydown" brake pedal which doesn't clear the frame so they had to go back to the earlier "stand up" pedal. You will also need the sidecar brake cover and remote master cylinder reservoir and hose (Same as FXR's by the way).

Better hurry, too, since parts are going to start drying up really quick since HD isn't making sidecars anymore. You are correct in re the VIN #. Ninth digit "0" is 1990. My Ultra has "4" for 2004 as ninth digit. I would only use original HD mounts as they are better than anything hand-made.

All of this sounds like good fun! Good luck! 🙂

From our other two posts, according to my HD manuals, "o" (zero ninth digit) is 1990.

Hi...from books i read vin # info and they state the 10 digit is the year..in this case its a J, which specifies 1988..
Im confused as I thought as well the 9th digit specified year.

Connection kit for 1999 to 2004 motorcycles is 87166-99A per my 2006 Sidecar manual, 99485096.

9th digit is the year.....per my 2004 parts manual, 99456-04A.

I'm still not sure if its a 1988 or a 90..

There was no difference between 1988 and 19990 TLE. Both had multi-leaf springs (single leaf came out in 1994) and drum brakes (disc brake came out in 1998).

That one will fit on your bike but you need to get the proper rear mount. The mount shown in the first picture is correct. It appears to be a two bolt 87114-93A. Note that it has the threaded boss on the right side with the attached spacer. Earlier ones had no spacer and the bolt slipped through both bosses which were unthreaded. They were secured with washers and a large 3/4 nut. If your frame is two bolt (probably is) , it should work, otherwise, you need the earlier one with three bolt holes..

That sidecar appears to be in nice condition. Your dog looks worried, though.....maybe he's concerned that there is no seatbelt. LOL.

The nicest change that came on the latest/last Harley TLE frames was the easily adjustable standoffs. They came on 2002 and later sidecars. They have a turnbuckle effect that permits changes in toe-in without removing the large bolts in the front and rear mounts.

Happy Trails.

If you don't have the damper use an early VW bug one. Same thing but about 80% cheaper than the Motor Co. charges.

Chicago HD has that kit at $845.00 U.S. It should have all three mounts plus the brake lever, brake master cylinder kit, brake tee, Elbow for oil pressure sending unit....

Book shows that you need:

87166-99A Connection kit.

Plus...
87776-98 Brake Line....may be able to work around this.
70221-99 Light Harness
88115-03 Bank Angle Sensor Switch....may be able to do without this.

http://www.chicagoharley.com/shop/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=87166-99A

Just found VIN table in the sidecar book. Sidecars are different from motorcycles. Who knew?

1 = Domestic
2 HD = HD
3. 8 = Sidecar
4. 8 = TLE
5. X = Engine type. Not applicable for sidecar.
6. 1 = Introduction date regular 2 = Mid year 3 = California
7. VIN Check digit 0-9 or X
8. Model year 6=2006, 5-2005, 4=2004, 3=2003, 2=2002, 1=2001, Y = 2000, X=1999
9. Assembly Plant T= Tomahawk
10. Sequential Number (Last 6 digits, varies)

You will no doubt have some modification to the light harnesses since the early cables on the early sidecar won't match up to the later 2002 bike. The brake cable may be usable with some adaptation. You definitely need the brake pedal to clear the sidecar frame and the different master cylinder cover and remote reservoir since the front of the sidecar frame hits the standad brake master cylinder...also have to move the oil pressure sending switch down with an elbow, but that's easy.

The Bank Angle Rollover Switch is a later modificatioin that HD came up with to prevent the engine shutting down on a hard turn. If you don't make hard turns, you may be able to forget this. I have one on my machine and I recommend them. Another $129.00....cough, cough. You don't need a book for your sidecar year. You need the 2002 book for your bike.

Good luck.
