I have a California II car and the gas shock used to hold up the "lid" while the passenger gets is defective and the one it uses is no longer available from the original manufacture. Does any one know where a replacement can be had short of using a stick.

Does your existing strut have any of the original markings still readable? I had good luck taking my worn out strut to a big auto parts house [in my case a NAPA store] and they had cross reference tables that let me buy a similar unit from another maker. Be careful about the "strength" of the strut. At first I got a unit that was about the same physical size but the effort required to compress the strut was much higher than the original.

Here's a link to a Tokico catalog that lists the specs for your strut. Any strut that has approximately the same spec should work. I didn't realize how small you strut was.

After going to my local auto parts shop, and a lot of online searching, I ordered this guy:

So I've got this thing and I threw it in there and it seems to work.
I can't compress the shock by hand, so I was actually a bit worried that it'd cause the lid to open on its own but it looks like the mechanical advantage is working against it when it is installed. It swings up gently by hand, but doesn't lift itself - most importantly for me is that it stays up once it is up.

Yeah it is pretty awesome! I take my 7 year old and I would always have to hold it open for him because he's not really strong and steady enough to do it himself but now he can do it because it basically helps itself up!
