Does anyone know if the later axle Harley used with the earlier frames when they switched to a disc brake, part number 87436-98, in 1998 had a 25 mm bearing diameter at both the inner and outer bearing locations. I have a 1990 sidecar with the drum brake and I want to switch to this axle so that I can use a 2010 front wheel on the car, along with a disc brake, to match my 2010 FLHX. If this won't work, I might machine the 87436-83 axle down to 25 mm since it's slightly larger and can be make to fit but I hesitate to ruin an old part.

Also, a guy from Florida Sidecar Products told me that his information from people who've run both brake types said that the drum brake works better. Does anyone have any first hand opinions? In what way were they better?

If I stayed with the drum brake, would I need a proportioning valve to equalize the brake effectiveness between the disc brake on the bike and the drum brake on the sidecar as the brakes are applied?

I have a 1996 drum brake sidecar on a 1993 Tour Glide and it works well. I used a double banjo bolt on the rear caliper to route the brake line to the sidecar. I don't think Harley used any proportioning valves on any year sidecars. They did add brake reservoirs on newer bikes (2000 and newer maybe?) to get enough fluid capacity for the extra brake.

I have had drum and disc brakes on HD sidecars. I could not tell the difference. The newest HD brakes do make an overall difference. I have close to 300,000 miles on HD sidecars. I own three now 01 03 and 07 they all run great. The rear tire on the newest bike 14 street glide with the 07 side car does last 2-3 times as long as the skinnier rear tire on the 01 and 03. hope this helps. Also none had any special brake valves.
