Here is a very affordable first rig. (Or second if you don't like getting your primary ride dirty.)

Winter is coming. And it would be hilarious to put knobbies on this and run it in the snow.

1996 Yamaha Virago with Dnepr Sidecar (Richmond VA) $3100

Bike has reasonable miles (23,000) said to be running. Shaft drive, 1000cc. Tub would be worth almost the asking price if the paint was better.  I've brought worse paint to glory.

Rig looks like it has a subframe and a damper.  Doubt it has a steering mod.

That looks like a great deal.  What a great way to get a start.  Your idea for a set of winter knobbies is awesome.  😎

Just to be clear....that engine is the 1,100 cc engine, as Yamaha didn't make a 1,000 cc engine. They made the 920 cc, and the 750cc, and a smaller one, like a 500cc, but never a 1,000cc Virago.

And for more clarity, this was not an error on the part of Drew @andrew-baker, as he simply saw what was in the ad, in one of the areas of the ad.

It's the seller that is the "dork" in this example, as he claims it to be a 1,100 cc engine in the specs, but says it's a XV1000 in the written text of the ad.

My wife had one of these, same year, same model, same color, and it is a great engine for sidecar use.

In defense of Drew @andrew-baker, I would not expect that a guy that sleeps with his head on a pillow embroidered with the BMW Roundel on it,           to know what engines Yamaha made back in the days of yore, or...the Virago days.

I don't recall ever seeing a Virago with such a mundane color scheme.  Most were far more exciting.  That said, excellent starter rig!

Party on, Garth!

There's three things to know about those pillowcases:

One they are over engineered,

Two they've got really good fasteners, and

Three they cost a fortune new but are reasonable in the used market.
