What do I have?

Hi Folks,

I'm a sidecar newbie and have a lot to learn. I just purchased this sidecar to custom mount to a 69 Harley Sprint for my Dad and after searching for a while on the Internet I have not been able to figure out what exactly I have.

I know it is Russian yet I cannot find any pics of a sidecar like this anywhere nor could I find any side cars where the description included "Sliding Hood" (see attached pic).

So anyone know what I have? Approximate vintage? What it is worth 'as is' and what it would be worth restored?

I am just about ready to fully disassemble it and start restoration so I can have it on the road by Summer. Luckily it looks like I have all the mounting hardware that came in a separate box albeit all rusty yet will clean up nice in the bead blaster. So essentially I have the complete side car with all hardware yet just missing the windscreen, bottom seat cushion, and I see remnants of some kind of upholstered arm rests, interior panels, etc. I will document the restoration with pics for this forum if there is interest.

I am attaching some pics to help identify it, any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thx!

Brig

The sidecar is a Jupiter made in Russia, Most in the USA were made around 1974, We can supply new lower mounting arms coverting it over to the more modern boss and clamp set up that uses 5/8 inch hiem joints. We can also supply new upper struts, We have "universal" type mounts. We do not offer mounts for your bike. This sidecar was originaly used on a 350cc two stroke IZH motorcycle. While your bike will handle it, If it were me I would put it on a bit more powerfull bike. We have new brake hardware for the sidecar, gaskets for the windshield and not much else in stock as we have not had a parts order in almost 15 years as the factory is gone. You can buy a windsheild from www.bikescreen.com

Thx Jay, I appreciate the information!

I agree eventually I would put it on a bigger bike. I am putting it on the Sprint for I did a Sprint restoration/customization for my Dad who is now 78 years old and want to add the sidecar for him to hopefully be able to just put put around town with so it does not need to have tons of power. I do not expect any human passengers when he is riding it, just groceries, and I expect that I may put around on it with my dog in the side car. So hopefully the Sprint will just have enough power to get him around w/o getting him in any trouble! 😉

So curious as to what kind of value these hold if they are fully restored? In my initial searches I never saw any sidecars like this nor did I identify Jupiter as a player in the industry yet now when I search on Jupiter I have found images of the Jupiter side cars. I thought the sliding hood was pretty cool and never saw that on any other side cars and wondered if that was desirable and made them more valuable? Do people collect these or are they sought after? Just want to make sure I do not spend too much time or $$ on something that is not worth the investment.

Oh and any pointers to articles on "How to mount a side car to a motorcycle using universal mounts" or something like that? I expect I will have to fab various custom mounts for the Sprint myself yet if there were some articles where someone documented their efforts at mounting a side car to motorcycle using custom fabricated mounts that would give me a base recipe that I could adapt to the Sprint.

Thx!

Jupiter, like a velorex, is good for a lightweight unit on a medium to small bike. In desirability I would place it above the velorex but below a Ural.
It is a good choice for a 250 to 650.

I like the sliding hood feature, I was thinking about doing that to my old Velorex. Post some pics of the mechanism if ya can later.

They will go good and look good with a larger bike.
Here's a good example of a restored rig.

This is 2nd generation Sputnik sidecar. This sidecar was originaly made in Russia for a 350cc two stroke IZH motorcycles called Jupiter (2 cylinders) or Planeta (1 cylinder). Motorcycles made in city Izhevsk, sidecars made in other city called Vjatskie Polyanu. I know you will not be able to say the name of this city. Here in Costa Rica a Bulgarian guy had a Ish with a Jupiter sidecar. The 350 ccm 2 cylinder 2 stroker died in less then 3000km several times due to our steep terrain and was repaired 3 times in the clutch and cylinder. The sidecar for sure would serve for much more, but the owner lost all fun with the engine repairs. I lost contact shortly after the last repair.

Thanks to everyone for posting the great pics & Jupiter information, much appreciated!

I will post some pics when the sidecar is restored and when I attach it to the HD Sprint.

I found a couple other people on other forums who have attached sidecars to HD Sprints so I'm not totally alone! 😉

Thx!
