Washington State Ferries Fee Question
I went to the WSF Fares website(s), and couldn't find an answer...
I ride from Southworth to Fauntleroy and back 5 days per week
(walk on mostly).
I'm thinking if I get a Ural I will quit my vanpool, not
buy a bus pass, and not buy a monthly walk-on ferry pass.
I'm hoping that will be enough to just about equal the ferry
passage for a bike & sidecar (or at least help justify it).
I found the $61.60 Wave2Go 20 ride motorcycle pass.
That's $123.20 per month for motorcycle ferry passage.
(2 trips per day, 20 days per month)
But the only info I can find about sidecar surcharge was
$4.60 per round trip ($2.30 each ride). That's $92 per month!!
That would make 20 rides with a sidecar almost as much as the car
& driver rate. (107.60/20 for M/C & SC vs. 142.40/20 for car)
Anybody here know how to handle the situation so it will be less than
$215 per month for Mon-Fri for a motorcycle & sidecar?
The sidecar surcharge must be a new fee (make that Ripoff) that the ferry system has instituted. I've never paid a "sidecar surcharge" in the last 20 years of using the "Black Ball" Ferry Line.
One of our sidecar customers was getting clouted for the extra axle fee at the Fauntleroy terminal but after consulting with the supervisor on that run it was resolved since a sidecar is an accessory and not classed as a vehicle. (They didn't refund any money though.)
If it was classed as a trailer or camper is, there would have to be a separate license for it.

Here's a link to the fares site for the route...
I should have put it in the first post (D'oh!)
It's right above the gray bar that says "Vehicle Length-Based".
I'm guessing they added the specific mention of sidecars when
they went to the new (more efficient) system. (The one they
had to hire about 25% more employees to implement).
My understanding is that it has existed before, but was not
enforced.
I can understand the reasoning... it requires almost the same space
as a car, but I'm not real happy about it, especially the amount
(A 74.7% increase versus w/o sidecar)
I'm such a malcontent when it comes to the government!
I went so far as to complain to my legistalors about the fact
that there is a surcharge for a bicycle in addition to the
standard pedestrian fee. I said in a state that claims to
want people to use alternative modes of transportation, that
is hypocrtitical.
