using car tire on drive wheel

Hey Everyone, I have a Honda vtx/Ural hack and am a member of a VTX forum. Lots of people installing car tires on rear wheel without any modifications being needed. One guy has 87000 miles on his 03 VTX and uses a Falken Z rated tire. Several other car tires are being used and everyone has positive remarks on all. I am thinking I would gain much better mileage in between tire changes. Please express your views on this subject before I go and spend the $66 on a tire I may not want to use!

I use a standard $75 Goodyear Eagle on my Valkyrie. Much softer ride, no modification to the rim or bike. On another post, I mistakenly said it was a 205/16. I was wrong, it's a 195.

These guys are using tires such as the Falken 205/55/r16. I thought it would be to wide but apparently not. I was thinking the tread would last much longer on a sidecar rig but am wondering what affect it may have on the ride?

On two wheels a lot of guys use the high speed racing tires, but on three wheels I think a standard tire is much nicer riding. Definitely a softer ride. If you're coming to Cameron for the SKUNK Rally, you can try mine.
You've got a week and a half for the ride, I can make it from here to Destin in around 20 hours. Well, actually I was younger when I did that. It might take a little longer today. :0)

I have a Honda GL1800 with a Hannigan sidecar and I run a Kumho 195/50R-16 on the rear drive wheel. Much better ride then a bike tire also no change to the rim.

Do you get much better mileage from the car tire Floyd?

Good info, Floyd. I'm planning to get a Hannigan for my GL1800, and am interested in a car tire for longer tread life.

I'll save the link.

Thanks

Bill

I'd love to get car tires for my Ural, but with the odd size (4" X 19") probably the only ones that would fit would be from an old Ford Model T. 😀 Oh, well, at least the Russian tires are cheap.

What things need to be considered when attempting to fit a car tire to a spoked motorcycle rim?

Thank you for all the great information. I have a Dunlop Sp sport 195/50R16 being mounted and balanced right now. Will pick it up later today. Now all I need is a good front tire replacement with some tread. Thanks again for your input. Frank
