Ural or not??
I'm new to this group, and I'm looking at buying a new Ural Patrol. Does anyone out there own one or have any first hand experience with them?
I live in southern California, and have been wanting one for a while.
I take my family out dirt bike and quad riding as well. I would love to take it to the desert as well as up the coast or in the mountains on dirt trails. the Ural looks looks like great fun!!
First hand pros and cons anyone?
Thanks for your help.
Ken
Have you been on the Ural web board? Plenty of information there. Go to www.imz-ural.com then click the community tab then web board. As is the case here, there are lots of good, helpful, knowledgeable people there...
Thank you for your help

Well, my new Tourist is due to arrive within the next two weeks; give me a month and I'll be able to report some firsthand experiences with them. But if you've been on the Soviet bike forums (don't forget Russian Iron at www.russianiron.com ) doing some research you'll get agood idea of what the bikes are about.
I have an 05 Ural Troyka. From what I hear, significant improvement over earlier models (750 engine, front disc brake, etc.). I really kind of enjoy the retro look to the bike, solid steel sidecar, etc.
It takes a little more maintenance than "hop on and ride" (but it is all covered in the CD's that come with it...including setting the valves, etc....all very easy for someone like me with nearly no skills). I think the rig is GREAT fun, and have actually begun to enjoy puttering around on it.
And hey, it's one of the FASTEST bikes out there...OK, as long as you are going in reverse (it DOES have a reverse gear)
Recently took a tourist out for a ride a blast to drive! Look pretty well built although still archaic in some respects. Looks easy to work on also. The trouble I had was getting used to sitting so high having been on a low rider for so long. Seem to be gaining in popularity. Couple of good used ones on e bay right now you may be able to save some money on. Also a nice one on here under classifieds. LOL
We also set Ural sidecars up on dual sport type bikes. We build about one a week many of which can be seen on the dual sport sectoin of our web site www.dauntlessmotors.com
Thank you.

I have better idea than the Ural, check out my vintage military Ghang Jiangs (1938 BMW R-71) With electric start and reverse trans.
Much better styles this is the bike taken away from Germany after W.W.2 Very cool bikes and i enjoyed them so much.. I moved to china to rebuild them and send them to the United States...Have 7 for sale in Hillsboro, Oregon, we offer full parts/accesories and complete service as well.
You wont believe what fun these bikes are..... come go for test ride.

And these are all legally inspected for resale in the United States and have Oregon titles?

Well, he's not the only commercial interest around here. He just hasn't figured out that he needs to switch from a fast ball to a knuckle ball for his pitch.
True, and also not to put the other guy down to make a pitch to sell his product. And be honest about his product.
I recently recieved an e mail from a guy who purchased a Dnepr on e bay. Supposed to be brand new. Thought he got a great price on the bike, all assembled. Got it delivered and to his surprise. Half of the bike was falling apart, no cotter pins in critical castle nuts, covered in cosmolene, metal shards in the oil, when he got it started wouldnt idle carbs leaking fuel, clutch wouldnt engage and when he checked all of the clutch disc material was disintegrated and lying in the primary pan. Need I go on? Needless to say he was upset and the seller will not return his e mails. He closed by saying the onlt truth to how it was advertised was that it was a motorcycle. (somewhat) Be carefull of the bargain basement deals out there if it seems to good to be true it probably is. LOL
