looks like it effected 2002 - 2004 GL1800's. We would likely be looking towards 07-08ish...

If frame not strong enough for single bike do you want to install big and havy sidecar on it?

My uncle is a harley nut, and he said, "Why not an electra glide?". Have not checked with Jay yet to see if the shorter sidecar frame would work, but that wouldn't be a bad bike either. Anyone know if they can push the weight of the Friendship III alright? Don't think I have seen one that big mounted on an FLH. The VTX is still an option, but I am liking the idea of starting with a fresh bike and building our own rig. Never owned a harley LOL. Just worked on them

The FSIII uses the same mounts as a FSI. No problem there. The difference with some of the FS frames is the ones for the GL's are made with an extension piece (about 12") in front to accomodate the longer lower frame.

If you decide to go with a Harley, give me a shout. My frame started out as a Harley one and had the piece added to it. Rather than try to adapt yours, maybe we could just swap frames. The mount is still on mine.

You would use the two lower mounts for a Harley, where I use the uppermost and the lower one.

I know I'll never put it on a Harley, so your frame would be fine for me.

It's all in the thinking stages right now. The only thing I know for sure, is I would like a newer bike at some point for it. The GL1200 runs fine, but I would feel better on trips with the family running something a little newer and with a slightly bigger motor. Far as the sidecar frames go, I think you would have to add that piece on to mine also. Accoding to what I have seen, the frames came in 2 lengths...and mine is the shorter one...

We rode the rig about 650 miles up the north shore of superior accouple weekends ago, and are loving it! Goldwing ran great, but I am definately leaning towards a slightly bigger bike for next season. We are already planning more trips for this year and next year! The harley idea is intriguing me more and more as I look at pictures online, but not as much the electra glide. Thinking a road glide would be a better fit. I have a friend who rebuilds wrecked bikes and has access to some very nice Road Glides with minor damage that I could fix up and paint to match the hack. I think the frames of an 07/08 electra glide and Road Glide are the same? Saw mostly TLE sidecars mounted to roadglides online, but Hack'n might be able to yea or nea the idea....

The '07-'08 Roadglide would make a fine tug. I would add a 103 CI kit to it if you expect to do much mountain touring. The 96 inchers won't hold the speeds without dropping a gear or two.

Not many mountains here in MN...but we do have a few steep hills. That is where the GL1200 does not shine currently. At about 70 - 75, there ain't much more go in the throttle. I am not quite brave enough to drop a gear at that speed/rpm to make it to the top of a hill! After all, it is an '86. I have visions of things going boom. Rightly or wrongly. LOL. Add to that, the fact I am a tinkerer and can't leave well enough alone. Haven't built a bike for a few years, and getting the itch for something new! My original thought was another Goldwing, But now I have owned one...and it would be fun to try something new. Researching a few other options also, but always open to peoples opinions and suggestions...

🙂 Can't ride sitting at work, so I spend free time looking at peoples rigs and researching bikes. Haven't had this much fun motorcycling in a long time! Going to be a long winter here in MN!

If you buy new bike you will have no "free time looking at peoples rigs and researching bikes." You will have to work more to pay for new bike. Also loaded 1500 frendship3 need 4 th gear on most hills. 4 and 5th gear on 1500 is overdrive.
