toll booth?
hi there. just wondering if anyone has had any problems going through tolls and having to pay prices higher than a car rate? we recently had a problem with one toll booth in DE, but all the others just charged the regular car fee. anyone else have any problems? i tried to look up old threads but couldn't find this topic.
thank you!
I FEEL YOUR PAIN, SAME PROBLEM IN NY, MOST TOLL'S NO PROBLEM BUT SOME TOLL TAKERS CHARGE BY THE AXLE, WE GOT 3 YOU KNOW. SOME TIME THEY JUST SCRATCH THERE HEAD'S AND SMILE. RIDE SAFE.
Go West, Young man, Go west!
Here in the Northwest (two countries), Idaho and the Canuckians) we're first on the ferries and first on the road detours. After that, you're on your own as long as you're senses aren't compromised by having a nip under the redundant helmet law of the state you're in.
All that freedom stops at the Idaho/Washington/Oregon/Nevada/Canada borders. We Ida HO's still believe in freedom of choice.
Now you know why we moved back to Good old Idaho. It wasn't the rain after all. It was back to a place where you had a f***ing choice. The old frontier town of Boise. Idaho. You can still pack here.
Lonnie (Two helmetless bike totals and still here.)
Northwest Sidecars
Here in Illinois a motorcycle with a trailer or a motorcycle with a sidecar are charged the same as a two axle vehicle. Unfortunately, many of our toll booth attendants are ignorant of this.
Had a similar issue on the Fla tollroad down south in the Homestead area. Shanika wanted to charge me for 3 axles but I convinced her that the rear axel connected to the sidecar wheel. She even got out to look, and swore up and down she did not see anything going across, but I still convineced her. Or maybe it was that lineup of about 50 chagers blowing their horns. No other troubles in the South Eastern parts of the country. Amd Lonnie, we too, don't have to wear those hot hats down here.

See ya all should move to Bonnie Scotland! We've just abolished all our Toll Booth's. Then again we pay $11 for a gallon of gas, so maybe you all wont be in a hurray to get over here.
Safe riding Karl.

Hey Karl,
but nowhere where I had been in the word but in Scotland I have seen such a grippy asfalt. You swung through the bends down to the ground and had no fear about sliding or drifting (exception on cattle ). That experience might be worth to spend a few dimes on getting back there...
At the road toll both here in Costa Rica I pay the same with or without sidecar. But possibly they see so few rigs that they don`t even think about to charge you more then a bikes toll. (there seem to be only 12 rigs in the country. (6 from them were assembled by the Jawa importer. Fernando Sanbria has an excellent hand for the aligning! Each time I get out of his shop a get amassed again how well the rig handles. I never got it so nice adjusted makeing it by my own.)
But for sure you get stopped by traffic police, not for to see the papers, but for to get a close look at the rig. But not as frequent as when you drive with an ancient car, then for sure every traffic cop will stop you.
I can tell from my times with the 1960 Willies Stationwaggon. => should save some time and money for to pull it out of the garage again...
regards
Sven
Give the crowd in DE who run the toll booths a call. I'll bet they have the same laws governing sidecar rigs that MD does. MD says that all sidecar rigs should be treated as a 2 wheeled motorcycle for purposes of tolls. The problem is that (1) the turnover for toll takers is high and (2) there are not many sidecar rigs that go through the toll booths. This can lead to lengthy delays while the thing gets ironed out.
The solution is to get an E-ZPass for the bike. It works like a charm.

the only toll I have to pay is when I head to the states,I'd be billed like a bike tho,...hehe....you poor guys!....crawf.
I always go thru the EZ pass lane.....don't care where I am.....camera's can't read my plate with the tour pak on.....ohhhh.....and I always salute the camera on the way thru too........bikers should be rewarded with free tolls.....we balance out the damage truckers do to highways and the gas SUVs drink.
Hal Kendal has done a lot of work ensuring that sidecars are treated as accesories and that rigs pay no more in tolls than two wheelers in all the states. If you get charged more than a motorcycle in any state, don't argue with the toll taker, just send your receipt to the toll authority with a letter explaining that you were overcharged and request a refund. You might also note the name of the toll taker and mention that in your letter so that they may be educated by their superior.

That might be worth it just for the nuisance value. With the recent rise in postal rates it might cost more to send the refund than the amount of the refund.
3 Wheeled vehicles are the only ones who pay the summer peak season surcharge on Washington State Ferries.
All other vehicles don't get charged the higher summer rates if
they buy a 20 ride pass card.
I have been emailing my Legislators, the ferry administration, and the media.
Still fighting this fight.
