What are the laws in the different states on sidecar titles and registration tags? Are they treated like a trailer? Or since they have VIN numbers, are they vehicles like boats and motorcycles and must have its own tag/registration sticker?

From what I've seen on the net, sidecars are are considered accessories and need no title or registration other than the bike's title and registration.

In New Hampshire a side car is a add on, just like a really big sadle bag. The only new thing is this year for new titles, the DOT came out with a new code for cycle with sidecar.

It would be nice if you had completed you profile.
What State are you in?
You should be concerned with your own State Laws first.
That should of been your starting point.
In some states, you can title the sidecar, and also get a seperate plate/tag for it.
After we help you out, we just mite let you know which they are.

Wiskers,
Which states, that you know of for sure, license and title sidecars as a separate vehicle?
I can see where legislators would like to find another pocket to pick, but I have never ran across this. They have always been classified as an accessory attachment.
My insurance company here in Washington doesn't even charge extra for insuring a sidecar rig as opposed to a solo bike.

Perhaps we're safer drivers and a lower risk. Maybe we just look bigger and as such are more intimidating to oncoming traffic and left turners.
But then again, maybe we're a truck with one headlight out.

CAN I Said,Title the Sidecar.
MA,I saw one,the bike had SIDE plate/tag,the Sidecar had HACK plate/tag.
NH,I purchased a Sidecar that had a Title,not required to Re~Title.
For Insurance Purposes & Resale it might not be a bad idea.
We have to pay extra for insurance here in NH for the HACK (if you want coverage), considered an Accessory.

I bought my project hack in North Carolina and the guy didn't have a title for it. As a matter of fact, this was the only hack out of 8 others he had that even had vin #'s on the frame. I made him right me a "bill of Sale" so I could at least prove that I bought the thing. As far as Ohio requiring title and registration, they don't, that I know of right now. We're in the process of working with the insurance company about it. Their talking insuring it as an accessory, just like they do my camping trailer I pull behind the bike.
