Looks like the insurance company is going to total my 1988 Harley with a sidecar .now i am looking for a replacement .my question is if i get the bike back as salvage what years do the mounts fit ?my sidecar isnt hurt too bad [the bike well thats another story ] i see some good deals on 89 and 90 tour glides .i was wondering if the mounts just bolt on or if they have any welding involved. or should i just look for another harley with a harley sidecar?

I never seen any mounts for a Harley with a Harley hack that you have to weld on. Going up one or two years I do not think it will be a problem. My Manuals only go back to 1989.

Yep insurance companies are quick to total a bike if it is 10 years old or older. That is why I only have bear minimum as I am able to fix anything on it and have many spare parts other then painting.

i was talking to the shop that did my work for 30 years .he said the salvage price will be way too high. [ people are paying high prices for wrecks ] i see a a few nice Harley /sidecar set ups out there . i am happy with a mid 80s early 90s if i find a real nice one . .now its just the waiting game till this is all done and settled

All Harley mounts are bolt on units. No welding. If the year is close to your wrecked bike, the mounts should fit. The main changes were usually to the rear mount. They went from three bolts up to 2002 and then to two bolts. They change again in 2008 but I have no info on those.

This would be a good chance to also up grade the sidecar to one with suspension on the wheel. You could also get one that is easier to get in and our of and has a trunk that opens from the out side. if you go to a standard non Harley sidecar we can supply mounts for most of them as well as of course we make sidecars as well.

I like my Harley rig do not have to worry as much about what weight I put it in or make changes near as often do to weight like you have to do on most sidecars.

We offer electric trim on many of our sidecars so that you can adjust for the weight in the sidecar, This also allows you to adjust for road condition and speed conditions. Having changed out several Harley brand sidecars over the years a common theme we hear from the passengers is that the ride is harsh. Some tend to get motion sickness from the rocking on the leaf springs and that they are hard to get in and out of.

Have not had a problem with anyone complain about motion sickness or complain about the ride but I understand where you are coming from. The electric trim is nice. How much does a good rig with the trim cost and what does the rig look like? I like and ride with all kinds of motorcycles and rigs but I am a die hard Harley person and think any Harley looks best with a Harley sidecar but we all know about opinions. LOL

Our most popular sidecar for the Harley type bikes is our M72C or the M72CX. The CX is the same as the C however it is 4 inches wider and comes with a disk brake a standard. On these sidecars we use a body that looks much like the Steib M72 but on our C and CX the body sits much lower. We run either a 16 inch Harley style wire spoke wheel or a 15 inch automotive wheel as standard. the fender is a styled like the rear fender on an FLH and we run a Harley style tail light and turn signals so it looks sharp on the Harley. This sidecar does offer the electric trim as an option. It is also very easy to get in and out if in that there is a step built into the side of the frame of the sidecar, The body has a cut down and the windshield folds forward out of the way for getting in and out. If you are running with out any one in the sidecar the windshield also folds down under the tonneau cover. The trunk is also nice in that it opens from the out side, Locks and seals water tight.
Base price on the M72C is $4995 the full price list can be found at http://www.dmcsidecars.com/sidecars/m72c/

Is there any way to put a standard 02 mag wheel on it. My HD hack has a disc but the old HD drum works fine.

Yes we can run most any wheel. We often will go with a used wheel and often we have the proper wheel on hand, take off rear wheels from trikes we have built.

So your axle will take a 1 inch ID bearing?

Our axle is what ever it needs to be for the wheel. Even the on some Harley wheels that Harley claims to be one inch they are really 25mm.
We build what ever is needed.

Yes the later models went to mm but I assure you mine is 1 inch. Other then when I went to Alaska with all most 90K I am the ONLY one that has worked on it including all but one tire change as the one I let someone else do was on the road and they broke my header pipe. I do not like anyone working on my bike. Been that way for 40 plus years.

Up until I sell my machines I do all my own motor work which on my twin cam all I have had to do to the motor is replace the came chain adjusters and the last time I was in it I up dated to the late pump and hydraulic cam chain adjusters. The only thing I cannot do to a twin cam flywheels as they are pressed together but any others I can rebuild the rods, balance the flywheels if needed, true, line bore cases and so on. I had a shop for 13 years and the only reason I closed it was could not find good reliable help and raising 3 girls as a single parent.
Thanks
