Stuck in a Muddle

Well i followed through and jacked up the front wheel of my wing. Lo and behold the handlebars are as free as a bird, so i jumped on started up and engaged 1st. I let the clutch out gently and the bike only moved an inch its like there was a brake on, there was also that rattle from the front i spoke about earlier. So the fault is not with the steering at all. As to where to start looking that is another story; so far not impressed. Help definitely wanted

May I politely suggest you keep your posts about this rig in one thread so we can easily find all the information to offer suggestions.
I couldn't find what was going on with the "steering lock" as far as how the bike was behaving in one of your other threads so it may help if you talked about that a little more in this one.
Did the wheel spin freely when it was on the jack?
Question for Miles. Do these have linked braking? Could something with the rear brake be causing the front brake to engage and contributing to Steve's issue?

And no you didn't buy a pile of crap.
Every bike needs a little love and attention from time to time. This is just your chance to get to know her so if she ever has a bad day out on the road you can figure it out and get her home.
Besides, crap is usually brown with a distinctive odor.

Thanks Drew i agree i could have made the explanation easier to follow
Steering locked and unable to free up. Doused liberally with WD40 etc no luck so far. Key gets nowhere near the locked position. Parked on grass so i am going to try jacking up the front of the outfit to take the weight off the front wheel etc so where is the best point to lift the front from?
I never thought to check wheel rotation so first thing in the morning

Before jacking it up see if it rolls without much effort. Make sure it's in neutral. Then if it doesn't roll easy lift one wheel at a time to see which one has a restriction. The other thing how long has it being sitting not being used, and when was the last time the brake fluid change.

I agree with Drew, lets keep everything here so we can keep the situation together and get you the help you need. Miles and myself as well as others have had and still have wings, Miles has had a couple more than most of us, but there is plenty of experience to help you sort everything out. I agree jack up each wheel one at a time and spin them until you find the culprit causing the drag. Yes, the brakes are linked, the rear brake applies the rear and the left front. Do you know when the timing belts were replaced last. if not I would highly recommend doing them, the rattle could be a number of things from a loose heat shield or belly pan if equipped to the idlers for the timing belts.
Oh Wow I just realized that was Varn's rig, hopefully there's nothing major going on there
EDIT I just went back and read your thread on getting it home. from the picture you posted I'm going to say it does not look like the steering has been changed, if you look at the picture here of my 1500 you can see how far the lower fender ext. is from the lower cowl chin of the bike.

Morning all
Rain here of course as i need to go outside, Wings shed is arriving tomorrow morning. No i cannot push the bike. I have ridden it no more than a mile since it arrived and rolled freely off the trailer. Yes i have to move it, at this moment drag it as its sits where the shed has to go. Job for the electric riding mower methinks. History wise everything seems to have been done including timing belts. i do have all the history. Not sure if links work, these are the sellers pics and some of the work he has done i have a box of bits that is still unopened that i suspect contain the heated grips etc

Miles mentioned that the wing has triple trees, me i do not know enough i just assumed he was right. He may or may not assist with this problem. I made what seems to be a mistake when i questioned the sense of jacking up the wing using the engine, as he unloaded all the press clippings etc detailing his experience. My reply to his approach was somewhat old fashioned!
Anyway onward

I was only basing my comment about the tree's on the picture I could see. from the picture they are the stock triple tree's not easy steer. I could very easily be mistaken. if it won't roll at all then you have a wheel binding somewhere, you need to figure out which wheel before you force it around. wait till the rain stops and you can get out there and check it.

Just been out and the front wheel is free so next is jack up the back wheel so time to check the book. Use the towing hitch for a jacking point i wonder

yes, use the tow hitch to lift the rear tire of the bike, then find a spot on the sidecar frame close to the wheel to lift the sidecar

Steve, I was just reminded about something, go check and let us know if the reverse lever is pulled up

Update number whatever =)
All the wheels are free. Started the wing and got it to move VERY slowly. Now that could be mud or maybe a combination of things. When moving it took a lot of revs to do it whereas before the bike would almost lift as though the brakes were stuck. So maybe i need to tow it onto firmer ground if i can. Front and center lower link on the sidecar to tow? Reverse is down and light out.
Why should i not use an electric riding mower to tow a Wing. i sure cant push it? I had surgery less that a week ago to remove tumors on my liver.
If this was a car i would have thought maybe the clutch is slipping?

Haha, Drone said don't drag it, if it is rolling freely then you can pull it around with anything you want. you say it took a lot of RPM to get it to move, is that because it was being held back. just curious when do you feel the gears engage when letting the clutch out, close to the bar or near full extension of the lever.

I would say about the middle, which i think from memory is about right. There is a rut in the ground where the wing moved forward at least the shed can now be delivered tomorrow.
