Is it wise to enter So. Cal. from the East? (I-40/I-15) I'm watching people evacuate by the thousands on T.V. Wondering if it is wise to continue into L.A., considering parts are now a Federal Disaster Area.

Anybody know if Griffith Park is still on? Are there fires in The Angeles Forest?

Talked to Doug B. Yesterday.
He said LA proper and Griffith Park weren't affected.
The Santa Ana winds are blowing from the Southeast to off shore and most of the devastation lies south and west of LA proper.

I'm going South from Boise tomorrow, I'll be on 395 to 14 to I-5.

Personal opinion would be to take Highway 10. The 10 corridor is quite smoky right now, but so far has not had any closures due to fire. The breeze has shifted and I understand it will now be blowing North East. At 3:30PM today, Oct 24 the dense smoke is moving out of the inland valley. The fire located in the Running Springs area is still zero contained, but with the wind shift, visibility has improved. Still heavy smoke laying in the valley westward (hwy 10) and in the Cajon Pass (North) which is highway 15. Now that the high winds have died down, the fires have slowed, and I believe that the closed section of 15 has reopened.

At times the smoke has been pretty bad - tough on the eyes and lungs.
If you are thinking of running the angeles crest highway - there are sections that have been closed for about a year - landslides, I think.
Yes Griffith Park is still on.
Take care - Maybe we'll see you at the rally.

Hwy 14 is open again. The fire around Santa Clarita and Canyon Country had it closed for a while.
For road conditions in CA you can contact caltrans online, ( http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/) or call "1-800.427.7623 or 916.445.7623 for current highway conditions."

The last I heard, sections of highway 18, and 330 were closed - but you don't want to go there. LOL
Have a safe ride Lonnie.

Its Friday evening, just returned from Biketoberfest in Florida. Broke my computer, so havent been online for a week or so.We have a place in Glendale, about 2 miles from Griffith Park. The weather today was fine, albeit a little hazy. Without all the news stations I wouldn't have known there was a catastrophe.Hope to see/meet some of you eiher Saturday night or Sunday.greg

I ended up taking a different route. I ran into Smoke at the Cal line coming from Fallon, NV so I headed to Death Valley just south of Lone Pine (no smoke there) but I could have done without the cheap ($4.69) California gas tho'. Came out at Baker and it was Smoky haze and an early Red sunset so I headed to an old bar in old Barstow for the night. Great run, People, Banquet and Rally. No real rain till last night (Mon.) in McDermitt, NV. Wet today clear to Boise where the sun was out. Ya gotta love it!

The '08 FXDL/563 Tour rig mileage was: 40 @ 65mph. 35+ @ 70mph. 30+ @ 75mph. The 6 speed does help.

I had a good time also. Took over 60 pictures. I rode in on a Black/Gold Road-King with a big Red Lab. in the tub.

Since you took the wanderers route, I hope we get a chance to see the photos and maybe hear about your trip. The Editor at The Sidecarist is always looking for articles, and us slow readers love pictures.
Thanks in advance for sharing. 🙂

Hey Gail,

We've been "wandering" on and off since late June. Over 15K miles and still riding. Getting ready to do a slow crawl up the Cali. coast to San Fran.

Don't know if the dog and I will ever go "home" again.

Hope you are enjoying HWY 1. Did you see the sea elephants located north of San Simeon?
Safe trip to you and your dog.
