sidecars and bells
What's up with most of the sidecar rigs having little bells on them.
Is there a history with it, or just because?

Hi davitaia: I presume you are refering to "Gremlin Bells":
From: www.gremlinbells.com: [A Gremlin Bell] is more than decoration, it serves a very important purpose – it wards off gremlins, also known as evil road spirits.
You see, there are motorcycle gremlins that LOVE to ride, but they are also mischievous little devils and they cause all sorts of problems for you while you are riding. Some say they are responsible for that old lady in the minivan not seeing you and cutting you off in traffic. Or, you may be having trouble shifting smoothly, your battery goes dead, your turn signal suddenly refuses to work, an oil spill appears out of nowhere, you hit a patch of black ice, etc – you get the idea. Those little gremlins look for trouble and try to steer your bike towards it.
Now, once you get a bell on your scoot – it wards off these attacks from the little gremlins, not allowing any more to get onto your bike. If you already have some gremlins riding with you, they will get trapped in the hollow of the bell, and the constant ringing will drive them insane – causing them to lose their grip and fall to the roadway.
... If you buy a gremlin bell of your own, the power works. If you receive the gremlin bell as a gift – the powerful magic of the bell is doubled. ... The bell, and a good preventive maintenance program by the bike's owner, will help eliminate the gremlins.
Yep, Jena and I have purchased each other little bells for our rigs.

Thanks. That's cool.

It's just a motorcycle thing. The first time I heard the gremlin story was maybe 5 years ago, but the bell on mine came off of my father's 1929 Indian. Back then the old guys would hang one on your bike and tell you, "I'll kick your backside if it ever touches the ground". Their way of telling us kids to ride safely. Now I'm an old guy so I keep a couple around for the kids.
Bells used to be common with 1%ers. In recent years, the other 99% have taken them up. I've had one on my bike for many years. They do for you whatever you believe they will do. You won't find them only on sidecars. They are all over the place.
My bride of 49+ years has kept me in "Bells of Sarno" for decades. Replaced if a bell or clapper was lost.
The last one (Currently hanging from the front axle of my latest bike) has survived a totaling out of my 2003 FXDL hack rig and almost 3 years on my 2008 FXDL hack rigs.
I don't rely solely on the bell for luck. I've also had a craven image of "Kukai li' Moku" attached to my right side mirrors through the years to assure my well being.
I got a double helping of lucky omen at Mt. Lassen a few years back when a hitchhiker stayed with me for several minutes.
Attached: A few belled rigs (front axle hung).
