Steve, if the  part # on that  alternator is 31100-MT2-015 that is a Hitachi alternator,  and is the  original  alternator.

The brushes part # is 31100-MN5-005, and if that is all that is  wrong, or worn down,  they can be  purchased  separately.

Steve, I  tried  cross referencing that  number  with any known  motorcycle  alternator  on this  planet,  with no luck.

Please....inspect every  nano millimeter  on that  alternator,  and find a different  number.

Here's is the label that gives a different number. But it does cross reference to the Honda number that Miles provided.

And here's is some other numbers.

Actually,,,,, not really. I just linked it to show the cross reference of part numbers. If you search the part number there are cheaper prices for the same thing. Better do your homework,,,lol.

If that 2019 is a date code, that's not a very happy indicator.  Means that it was replaced relatively early for that model and it's failed again.  I'm not a great "hunter" of electrical gremlins, but I'm willing to bet that some of the wiring in your bike is causing significant current draw while running and that's cooking alternators.

FWIW, we had a Honda PC 800 that sold to a local.  While out on a road trip, the regulator on it went out and instead of under producing voltage, it over produced, upwards of 20v which caused the battery and some connectors to actually melt.  New regulator and rectifier fixed the problem, but it was pretty scary for him when it happened.

I did look through the history and they had problems with the alternator in 1998 and the brushes were changed then the alternator,. I did strip off some of the crummy wiring and i suppose that could have worked in my favor i am also replacing a suspect relay that is shown in the pictures; i might do a complete relay/fuse change. I did put the volt meter on the battery between the disconnected earth and the battery and it did not show any drain. i could have got lucky and if the alternator is cooking batteries over time 10 years will be plenty right. But investigations will continue.

Well no parts available locally for rebuild and no part numbers on the case makes me a bit edgy. So i guess its a new OEM from Honda any suggestions on a source for this?

Steve,

I would probably go with the "Shorty" 50 amp kit... Looks like it would fit about where the old one was mounted, without a lot of excess wire or trimming:

Great news on the Cancer front.  We will keep our paws crossed that number continues to drop. 👍

Changing the alt. on a 1500 GW is no big deal and can be done on the side of the road or in your garage in less than 2 hours. Practice will get that time down!  Alternators are available overnight from Amazon for $89.00 to $400.00. A quick look and I think they are all the same units out of China. The second one was in in about 45 minutes. Lucky for all of us that the sidecar is on the other side basic_smile
