Sidecar brakes
Hello all. New "Old gummer" here. Signed on to get as much info as possible on hacking my Burgman 650. Been thinking about it for some time and figured it's about time I really looked into the process. One of many questions I have is, I read where some cars have brakes. How does that work? Any info will be appreciated.
Thanks.. Bill

To answer your original question...
1. The is no universal agreement on whether brakes on a sidecar are necessary. Generally, the smaller/lighter your sidecar is the less you'll feel the need and even with a heavier car, you'll adjust to not having them very quickly.
2. If you do choose to have a sidecar brake, the most common fitting is to plumb the brake on the sidecar in with the rear wheel although, some sidecars are plumbed into the front brake. Obviously, on bikes with linked brakes you don't have a choice.
3. If your sidecar doesn't come with brakes, adding them is a bit of a pain because you'll have to fabricate brackets. There are several good sidecar riggers that can do the job if you can't or don't want to.
4. Personal advice... you probably don't need a sidecar brake. I've got rigs with and without and there really isn't all that much difference. 'Just my opinion, you'll hear others.

talked to JR Avanell's husband a couple weeks ago . she has a different car now or a smaller wheel. i have a suz gs850/hitchhiker w/o brakes and a yam xs11/ hitchhiker w/o brakes. also have hongl1500/hannigan with brakes. i like the brakes on the bigger rig. it has it's own master cyl. and is operated by the back brake..........fly
Bill, you might try a guy name Bob Wark of The Warkshop down in Marietta, Ohio. He's a great sidecar guy and has rigged Burgmans. He rigged my V-Star with a Texas sidecar 3 years ago and did a great job.

I always recomend a brake. If it keeps you out of an accident once it was worth the effort and cost to install it. When we hook up sidecars to the Burgman we usualy use our Kenna sidecar and do offer a full kit for your bike we hook the brake up to the rear calipar as it is easy to get to. We use a double banjo bolt to add the brake line. The brake on the sidecar is sized to work well with this set up.
If you send me an email request I will forward on our mounting instructions so that you can see what all is involved. If you go to our web site in the Kenna section you will see photo's of Burgmans. The Burgmans make great sidecar bikes.
